Children and Youth Ministry

I am so excited to announce our theme for 2023-24 program year - Imago Dei - Made in the Image of God. This year, we will explore a great cosmic mystery; what does it mean to be made in the image of God?

As the seasons change, we are invited into wonder with God's creative and renewing spirit.

Fall: Like leaves being stripped from the trees, we start with the simplest, yet most complex, question of our faith. The creator of the stars and galaxies, who knows each of us by name - Who is God?

Winter: As creatures burrow into the ground, hibernate in caves, and plants stop producing fruit, we also turn inward. As an image bearer of God - who am I?

Spring: The first signs of spring emerge as lilies, daffodils, and tulips bravely poke through the soil and rejoin the outside world. Like a flower blooming, we too bravely step into the world and look outside of ourselves, asking the ancient biblical question - Who is my neighbor?

All Parish Picnic and Kickoff Sunday

The Bouncy House has been ordered, the grills are getting cleaned, and our time to gather for an old-fashioned church potluck picnic has finally arrived.

All are welcome to come partake in this fun, delicious get-together on Sunday, September 10th immediately after church. Plus, recall this is also Kick-Off Sunday celebrating our reuniting after a long hot summer, complete with new updated Ministry Guides and Church Directories for you to take home. If we still have not sold you on the day, remember this is also the day 13 lucky winners will find out if their ticket is a cash winner from our summer-long Gifts of Gratitude fundraiser!

As always, we appreciate a head count of attendees, and a mention of what you would like to bring to share (side dish, salad, or dessert). Burgers, hotdogs, buns, condiments, beverages, and paper products will be provided.  Please sign up from the Sign-Up Genius link below or opt to sign up by pen to paper on the clipboards at church (narthex/undercroft).  If you are unable to bring a dish to share, or forget to sign up, no worries…. Trail Magic--Take 2--This coming Sunday-- August 27th

The TRAIL MAGIC signs are now beautifully decorated (THANKS ALL) , so we are ready to partake in our Faithful Innovation Experiment #2.  Join us this coming Sunday around 11ish after church, as we meet our neighbors down by the trail.

All you need to do is show up and sit by the trail with us, offering up hydration, dog treats and human treats (ice pops), listening ears, and conversation with our neighbors passing by. Kids are most welcome to attend too!

We hope you will participate in this little hospitality experiment right here in our neighborhood!  Questions, please contact me, Diane, at dcurley@stdavidsparish.org

ICA Update

Next ICA Sunday at St. David’s - September 3

Just a heads up that September 3rd will be our next ICA Sunday. Since school is about to start, please consider giving items that will help nourish children (and their families) in this new school year. Have you noticed that there seems to be a significant increase in children experiencing food allergies? With that in mind, we would like you to consider focusing your donations on Allergy Aware.

What ICA needs with this focus:

  • Gluten-free snacks
  • Dye-free cereal
  • Nut-free granola bars
  • Shelf stable milk alternative

Other current needs include kid-friendly cereal, peanut butter, coffee, tea, pasta sauce, and personal items. As always, anything else you wish to donate is always most appreciated. If you prefer to donate funds to ICA, you can drop a check made out to ICA in the Sunday collection plate or donate online using the QR code on the ICA poster at each entrance or at www.icafoodshelf.org, clicking on the Donate section. Thank you for however you choose to support ICA.

ICA Birthday Bag Program

Now in its second year, ICA’s birthday bag program has been very successful. It gives our neighbors the opportunity to get birthday bags for their children. The bags are generic and are intended to be given to families with school-aged children that have birthdays during that particular month. Each bag contains a baking tin, cake mix, frosting, candles, plates & napkins.

Currently, ICA is running low on birthday bags as well as the items to put them together. Please consider supporting this program either by donating any of the items listed above or by putting together a bag or two, ready to be given to a family. This can be a fun activity to share with your family while benefiting local families not as fortunate as ours.

Volunteer Opportunity

ICA is looking for volunteers who are able to help translate for our neighbors. Do you speak fluent Spanish, Russian or Somali? Volunteers are needed to help for 2 hour shifts on weekdays. If you are interested, please contact Rebecca MacKenzie, ICA Volunteer Manager at

volunteer@icafoodshelf.org.

Announcements and Reports

August Vestry Report

The Vestry met this past Monday for our monthly August meeting. We started out by gathering for another delicious dinner, generously provided by Nan Drake. After an opening scripture reflection with Gospel Based Discipleship, we then dove into the business of the night with continued discussion and discernment surrounding the revised and updated Vision Statements for St. David's. These visions are rooted in the ECMN Four Commitments for Congregational Vitality and will be presented at the St. David's annual meeting in January for review and adoption as part of our new 5-year Strategic Plan.  We also spent time discussing our Vestry members' lay ministry liaison check-ins. It was determined what ministries voiced needs and concerns and the Vestry is brainstorming ways by which to assist these ministries.  We then spoke about the upcoming Ministry Fair, scheduled for the September 17th Forum, in which we will highlight some of the many lay ministries in which parishioners can get involved.....complete with a few parishioners' sharing their own personal ministry stories.

New business was then discussed. First off, plans for Kick-Off Sunday, September 10th includes a Parish Picnic, Bingo, Peace Garden tours, bubbles, a bouncy house, and our Gifts of Gratitude drawing. Katherine shared the many programming plans going on now amongst the church staff. Discipleship and formation opportunities for the parish are at the forefront. A survey is being considered for the parish in order to determine interests/needs/availabilities. Buildings and Grounds have settled down a bit this past month after a busy July of broken-down equipment. Good news, the new St. David's Logo sign for Mtka Blvd is getting closer to fruition. We are hoping it will be up before the snow flies!

As always, the Vestry welcomes any comments, questions, or concerns.

Respectfully submitted,

Diane Curley, Jr. Warden

Endowment Committee Update

The Endowment Committee would like to invite you to a special Coffee Hour after the 9:30 service on August 27th. It will be held in the Narthex so that we can focus on the names of all the donors to the Cornerstone Endowment and truly appreciate their contributions toward the future of our church.

We’d also like to inform you that the Endowment Committee has had several changes in membership and leadership this year. We welcomed a new Sr. Warden, Allison Ferro, new Vestry Rep, David Niles, and new member, Barbara Hise. The Committee also appointed Vida Edmond as Chair after Robby Stokes decided to step back after several years of leading the Endowment Committee. Vida previously served as Vice Chair for 3 years and Bill Jacobs will now take that role. Robby will remain on the Committee as a member as Vida takes over the leadership role.

Gifts of Gratitude Benefit Drawing

We are ever grateful for these beautiful buildings and grounds here on St. Davids Road!  This is where we launch our ministries and outreach work.  One way to fund these efforts is through this benefit drawing.

Every ticket purchased offers someone a chance to win great cash prizes.

Winners to be drawn at Kick-Off Sunday September 10th.

Tickets are $100.00 each. Please see a friendly ticket agent in the Narthex on Sunday! Thank you!

To add someone to the prayers, please contact the office: office@stdavidsparish.org

We will include all individuals in the prayers list for four consecutive weeks, and then they will be removed from the list. If the prayer need is ongoing, please reach out and we will keep their names on the list. If anyone's prayer need is shorter than four weeks, please also note that. This way we will keep all prayer lists updated and recent.
