February Vestry Meeting Update

Your Vestry met this past Monday evening with a very busy agenda at hand. As usual, we started out the evening with a communal dinner around the table, followed by sharing personal reflections on one of St. David’s 7 vision statements. From our newly created Vision Jar (a decorated mason jar filled with 7 strips of paper, each with one of the vision statements printed on them) we randomly picked out vision #3. That vision statement reads “We know and are known by one another and respond with love and compassion to the needs of others.” Thoughtful sharing ensued. Next month we will pick out another vision statement and reflect.

We then moved into the heart of the meeting addressing a couple of important topics at hand. First off, we dove into discussion and discernment surrounding our vision driven “inside and outside the boat” dreams for St David’s. (To see all those dreams discovered, check out the boat poster in the undercroft). From our earlier Vestry Retreat work, data clearly revealed that 6 needs/actions/pursuits for St David’s spoke the loudest to all of us. Of these top six, we noticed they were equally touching both possibilities within our church, and also those outside our church within our community. Four that stood out at the top were:

1- Comprehensive Buildings/Grounds Plan (includes ICA Space and outdoor space)

2- Small Group Faith Formation

3- Pilgrimage/Mission Trip

4- Small scale community based/interfaith/intergenerational dialogues and service projects.

Secondly, we then spent time working on a way to organize the vestry to further support congregational ministries. The plan is to incorporate a Shepherding Role, by which Vestry members will serve as liaisons between important ministry areas of St David’s and the Vestry. Both improved communication and support play critical pieces in this endeavor.

The rest of the evening was filled with approvals, appointments, reports, and new business. Thanks go out to parishioners Jerry Betz and Cathy Schwichtenberg for volunteering to serve on the Endowment Committee, along with Nan Drake agreeing to serve as our new Vestry representative to this same committee. Of note, mark your calendars now for an exciting dive into the water with a Faithful Innovation Experiment, participating in this year’s Hopkin’s Raspberry Festival and Parade on July 20 and 21, respectively. All ages welcome!

Yours in Christ,

Diane Curley, Senior Warden, St. David’s Episcopal Church

Growing our Welcoming Culture at St. David's

At St. David's Episcopal Church we are committed to following Jesus' example of practicing radical hospitality and seeking to find God in all people because they are of sacred worth. As we continue to grow into our proclaimed Statement of Welcome, your newcomer team has been working diligently on developing and improving processes for how we greet and welcome visitors and incorporate new members.

You will notice some changes in the forms we use to capture visitor information and some remodeling of the welcome space in the Narthex. Also important is the initiation of a greeter program that will ensure that someone is working alongside Katherine to focus on meeting and greeting St. David's visitors on Sundays. It's a simple job description, only requiring your time and attention for a few moments before, during, and after the 9:30 service. If you are interested in participating in this ministry, please contact Cathy Schwichtenberg, casschwich@gmail.com

Keep in mind that welcoming is not just the job of the greeter! We all need to attend to noticing and greeting visitors and one another on Sunday and other times we gather.

Please say hello to those you may not have met yet. We never know how any of us, or any visitor, can grow into the life of our parish!

Hold the date for our Newcomer Brunch on April 28th!

Buildings and Grounds Update

The Buildings and Grounds Commission is made up of five parishioners who are responsible for maintenance, repairs, cleanup, and service of the church campus. We can’t do this without your help. We’re looking for volunteers to serve on a Buildings and Grounds Support Team. The Support Team doesn’t come with the commitment of regular meetings and schedules and budgets. It is simply a group of folks who are open to help when a need arises. It is a low-pressure way to serve. Items that you may be called to do:

  • Event setup / tear down
  • Cleanup days
  • Special projects
  • Painting
  • Routine repairs

If you feel compelled to serve, please contact Randy Schwichtenberg or any member on the Buildings and Grounds Commission.

Thank you for considering this opportunity to serve!
