Community Events

Evensong

On Wednesday, August 2, at 7:30pm, all are invited to a service of Evensong (musical

evening prayer) in the sanctuary. This liturgy of scripture and song can be celebrated in

many different styles, and we plan to incorporate it occasionally into our parish

calendar. This time we’ll sing a simple chanted setting, using some of the hidden

treasures from our hymnal.

Anyone who would like to sing with the choir is invited to come an hour early, at 6:30,

for a brief rehearsal.

Contact Roger Stratton for more information. rstratton@stdavidsparish.org

St. David's Book Club

St David’s Book Club News

by Cathy Schwichtenberg

NOTE: Date changed due to National Night Out.

The St. David’s Book Club upcoming selection will be discussed on Tuesday, August 8, from 6:30 pm – 7:55 pm. This month’s book is Little Bee by Chris Clive.

Book clubs in search of the next Kite Runner need look no further than this astonishing, flawless novel about what happens when ordinary, mundane Western lives are thrown into stark contrast against the terrifying realities of war-torn Africa. Their marriage in crisis, Andrew and Sarah O'Rourke impulsively accept a junket to a Nigerian beach resort as a last-ditch attempt to reconcile. When machete-wielding soldiers appear out of the jungle and force them to determine the fate of two African girls, everyone's lives are irrevocably shattered. Two years later in a London suburb, one of the girls, now a refugee, reconnects with Sarah. Together they face wrenching tests of a friendship forged under extreme duress. Best-selling author Cleave (Incendiary) effortlessly moves between alternating viewpoints with lucid, poignant prose and the occasional lighter note. A tension-filled dramatic ending and plenty of moral dilemmas add up to a satisfying, emotional read. Highly recommended for all libraries and book clubs. ~Hclib.org

Vestry Update

Your St David's Vestry met this past Monday for a 4-hour, mid-year retreat, focused on strategic planning. Our current vision statements were approved in 2019 for three years: 2020-2023, and so it is time to review and update them to make sure they accurately define our congregation. A lot has changed in three years including Covid, George Floyd's murder, and the arrival of Bishop Loya, but we found that the vision statements still predominantly ring true, and so we decided to edit what we have, rather than start from scratch. Thanks to the team that did the heavy lifting back in 2019 for making our job easier!

During the retreat, we articulated grounding assumptions to guide our planning and then thoughtfully examined and proposed changes to our current vision statements using the assumptions and the ECMN Four Commitments for Congregational Vitality: Discipleship, Justice, Faithful Innovation, and Vital Communities. We also decided to propose using this next set of vision statements for five years instead of three. We accomplished a lot and now will do some more wordsmithing and review the draft at a future vestry meeting. Our plan is to bring this 5-year vision to our January 2024 Annual Meeting for discussion and adoption.

With the visions in hand, we were then able to look back at the Vestry's Brainstorming Tree ( Feb Retreat) in which we documented the many needs, dreams, and opportunities we saw for our St. David's community. We then chose some of those dreams which we felt lived into these visions. We left the retreat energized with thoughts of where we can move forward as we faithfully walk the walk of living out our vision, getting busy and getting things done!

Our monthly business meeting then commenced. We started with Gospel Based Discipleship, sharing in the word of Ephesians 4:11-16. Reports were reviewed and approved, including the current Financials. Building and Grounds have been very busy of late, so the highlight of the night seemed to be major large purchases needed to care for our building. A new Air-conditioning System purchase was approved, and a new Freezer and Refrigerator are soon to be installed. Finally, the new sign with our new St David's logo has been finalized and will soon be hung on the newly painted banner frame along the bike trail.

Also, much thanks out to Allison for a delicious dinner and dessert (thanks Gavin, for baking) that fueled us for the evening's work!

Respectfully Submitted,

Diane Curley, Junior Warden

Beacon Youth Resident Move-In

Donations Needed!

Did you know that in MN, almost a quarter of youth who experience homelessness identify as LGBTQ? Beacon's housing for homeless youth and our awesome service partners provide stability and community with great success - most youth moving on to independence in under 2 years.

One way you can show support and keep the spirit of Pride month going is by donating household items and supplies for residents moving into their new home, so they can "shop" to set up their household and feel at home after the trauma of homelessness.

Donations are urgently needed for Prior Crossing in St Paul where new residents are expected to move in THIS MONTH! Contact Fritz or Emily for more info on needed items or share this link to a Target registry!

https://www.target.com/gift-registry/gift/prior-crossing-move-ins

It’s easy to order online from the registry and it will be delivered to Prior Crossing. The cost of items is minimal from $.50 to $25. If you can help out, please check out the registry link.

To add someone to the prayers, please contact the office: office@stdavidsparish.org

We will include all individuals in the prayers list for four consecutive weeks, and then they will be removed from the list. If the prayer need is ongoing, please reach out and we will keep their names on the list. If anyone's prayer need is shorter than four weeks, please also note that. This way we will keep all prayer lists updated and recent.
