Because Lutherans know how to party: Polka Sunday on October 27 was a glorious day with good food, fabulous music, and wonderful friends. The polka-infused Reformation service was followed by a sausage lunch on the lawn. Local First Responders were invited for lunch. 347 pounds of food and a whopping $1234 was collected for the Christian Cupboard. Big THANKS to Mike and the Middletones for providing terrific Polka music. We are better together!

All Saints Sunday

November 3, 2019

The first Sunday of November is the day set aside in the church’s calendar to remember, reflect, and celebrate the lives of those who have passed away and those who have been baptized over our year together. During Emanuel’s 10:30 a.m. worship service, every family or individual representative will be presented a carnation and invited to gather at the baptismal font for a prayer.

This year we offer an additional place to remember and celebrate these saints. Decorated tables will be set up just below the altar. We invite anyone who is interested to bring a 5x7 standing framed photo of their loved one(s). Centered around the font, these Remembrance Tables will remind us of the great cloud of witnesses who have gone on before us and whose, faith, life, and memories continue to impact and encourage us.

COFFEE CAKES! Ladies Aid will be baking their delicious Coffee Cakes for the last time this year on November 4th. You can call the church office at 379-5046 and ask to speak to the ladies and reserve your fresh coffee cakes and pick them up by 1:00 pm on that day. The Ladies Aid would like to thank each and everyone for their continued support.

MIDDLE SCHOOL YOUTH GATHERING will take place November 15-17th and is open to all of our Confirmation youth. Registration continues through Friday, November 8th. Please contact Pastor Marcus or Pastor Kelsie if your youth wishes to attend. More information, packing, and trip details will be emailed individually next week.

HEALING THROUGH CONVERSATIONS will meet on Thursday, November 14 at 10 a.m. in the Family Life Center. We will talk about depression this month and have Barbara Vinson with NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) as our guest speaker. If you have lost a loved

one to death, no matter how long or recently it has been, you are welcome to join us.

NEW MEMBER SUNDAY is November 17. On this day we recognize and warmly welcome our newest Emanuel’s family members. If you are interested in joining, please speak with Pastor Marcus or Pastor Kelsie.

ADVENT AND CHRISTMAS DECORATING will take place over a couple of weeks this year, November 18-22 and 25-27, with our big work day on Saturday, November 30. Whether you can give 15 minutes to tie bows or fluff wreaths or an hour to unpack and setup trees, we would love to have your help. Saturday’s work day will begin at 9am in the Sanctuary. Donuts

NIGHTTIME CORN MAZE trip for all high school and middle school youth to the Graff 7A Ranch in Hondo is set for Saturday, November 23. We will gather and leave form the Mountain Street parking lot at 5:30pm and return around 10pm. The admission ticket is covered, youth just need to bring money for food. Please contact Pastor Marcus or Pastor Kelsie if your youth are able to attend.

ANNUAL COMMUNITY THANKSGIVING SERVICE is at First United Methodist Church on Tuesday, November 26 at 7:00 PM. Join us for an evening of thankful praise in music and word. Emanuel’s Heavenly Ringers Bell Choir will participate in the service.

SALVATION ARMY BELL RINGING hosted by Emanuel’s on Friday, November 29 . We are seeking bell ringers for a 2 (or 1) hour shift between 9 AM and 5 PM at Walmart. Great family activity! The annual Christmas Kettle Campaign is a MAJOR funding source for the Seguin Unit. If you can help, call Frances Vinyard at 830-379-5041.

HOLIDAY MEAL DELIVERY on Saturday, December 7 . Join us for the annual delivery of holiday meals to our shut-in and elderly members. Volunteers are needed at 10 AM in the Fellowship Hall to package the turkey and dressing dinners, and drivers are needed to deliver meals. HOLIDAY TAMALE SALE Emanuel’s Youth are selling Delicious Tamales this year to help fund their summer activities. Place your order from any youth starting November 10 in the Narthex, or in the office. Orders due by December 8 with pickup of frozen tamales on Sunday, Dec. 15. Chicken, Bean & Jalapeno, Traditional Pork, and Jalapeno Pork Tamales only $12/dz.

QUILT RAFFLE tickets are now available! The quilters of the Emanuel’s Ladies Aid are raffling a queen-sized, hand-quilted quilt for the annual bazaar. The drawing for the winner will take place at their annual Christmas luncheon on Wednesday, December 4. Tickets are $1 ea. or 6 for $5 from any Ladies Aid member, in the Narthex on Sunday mornings, at the Sausage Lunch, at the Bazaar, or in the church office.

HOPE IN THE HOLIDAYS

Our society has huge expectations of the holidays. All around us, whether it be on television or in the shopping mall, the message that is sent is “The holidays are the most wonderful time of the year.” While they can be and often are a season of renewed memories, traditions, and family ties, the holidays can also be challenging. When we compare our experience to someone else’s, it’s easy to feel out of step. It’s easy to get caught in the trap of trying to make it the perfect holiday. And if we’re struggling with life issues like an illness, leaving or losing a job, or the death of a loved one, we really feel adrift.

A little bit of cold weather isn't going to stop this group from having fun on October 31st! Pastor Marcus got bit by the cutest little baby shark (He is fine.) and Pastor Kelsie was defying gravity every witch way. The Day School children hit the halls searching for tricks and treats. Happy to have the Thursday Bulletin Folders handy to appease this mob of merry munchkins.

ELC150 In The Works

In celebration of our upcoming 150th Anniversary a new logo was designed to honor Emanuel’s past, present, and future. The image by Rita Frey of Frey Creative Media was unveiled at our annual Sausage Lunch on Reformation Sunday. Rita asked good questions about who we are as a church and how we wish to be seen in the community. Words that popped up in conversation included: traditional, bold, community, heritage, fresh, contemporary, faithful. We talked about the wide range of ages within our membership, the historic Ranger Oak that is so intrinsic to this place, and the bell tower that stands high above the city for all to see. We are grateful to Rita’s excellent listening skills and vision to create a symbol that is memorable, versatile, relevant, and inviting. Special thanks to the Logo Committee for thinking forward and outward as Emanuel’s prepares for a special season of remembrance and jubilation.

ELYO: High Schoolers meeting monthly at 9:15 on the 2nd Sunday in the Youth Room off the Fellowship Hall for breakfast, discussion, service, games and fellowship. We also gather once a month for a fun outing. Check out the calendar for fellowship events!
