Spotlight on Saint Andrew’s Community: Polaris Choir

Polaris is the flagship ensemble for Choirs for Change, and it performs regularly in community events such as marches, rallies, and festivals. They rehearse at St. Andrew’s every week and will be our guests in worship this Sunday.

Polaris is an adult community choir led by Ryan Henwood and Adam Johnson. The ensemble is characterized by diverse, mid to high level choral repertoire, and in-depth reflection on social change topics.

Polaris is suited for folks who come to the ensemble with pre-existing choir experience and foundational understandings of social justice practices, but is open to anyone who is interested.

Polaris has a concert coming up. Here's the info:

Saint Andrew's Supports Social Justice: Warm Clothes Needed!

On The Stage at Saint Andrew's

Cecilia Presents Illia Ovcharenko

November 15

7:30pm

Ukrainian pianist Illia Ovcharenko, one of the world’s most celebrated young artists, electrified our Halifax audience with his stunning performance two years ago, and now he returns to share his artistry once again. Winner of the prestigious Honens International Piano Competition, Illia's breathtaking technique and emotional depth transcend the traditional boundaries of classical performance. He has captivated audiences at venues including Carnegie Hall and the Konzerthaus Berlin, and with orchestras like the Toronto Symphony Orchestra.

His richly expressive program features five lyrical and rarely heard works by Sergei Bortkiewicz, including the poetic "Etude" and "Lied Ohne Worte" from “4 Klavierstücke,” and the nocturne-like "Diana" from “3 Pieces.” Also included are Frédéric Chopin’s sparkling “3 Waltzes,” his introspective “Nocturne in E minor,” and the dramatic brilliance of his “Scherzo No. 2 in B-flat minor.” Franz Liszt’s virtuosic solo piano transcription of Beethoven’s “Symphony No. 7 in A major” brings orchestral grandeur to the program through the hands of a single artist. With a passion for romantic repertoire and an innate ability to connect with listeners, Illia’s second Halifax performance offers an intimate and transformative musical experience.

Nova Sinfonia with Conductor Dr. Leonardo Perez

November 17

7:30pm

Nova Sinfonia Orchestra Society presents the second concert of its 30th anniversary season. This concert's program is joyful, uplifting and exciting at times! Don't miss this opportunity to hear high quality orchestral music at affordable prices. You won't be disappointed!

Founded in 1995, the symphony orchestra is comprised of professional and amateur musicians who rehearse and perform orchestral repertoire together. The orchestra strives to provide a high standard of musical performance as a complement to the musical offerings within the community.

Daughters of Donbas - Songs of Stolen Children

November 20

6:00pm

Daughters of Donbas – Songs of Stolen Children is a music/human rights project that deals with the ~20,000 Ukrainian children that have been abducted from occupied regions in Eastern Ukraine and taken to Russia.

Amnesty International Prize winner Marichka, the founder, executive producer, and the lead singer of Daughters of Donbas (Toronto, ON), along with Grammy-nominated producer Dan Rosenberg have brought together a group of talented and passionate professional musicians to give the voice to captured children who tragically can’t speak for themselves. Hauntingly beautiful acoustic vibrations translate the themes of sorrow and hope. Weaving Ukrainian folk music into the modern context, Daughters of Donbas draw the strength from their ancestry and storytelling traditions to speak the hard truth of the ongoing cultural erasure. Their hope is in speaking up and unity in action, which this 80-minute concert is meant to inspire.

Featuring the Halifax Ukrainian Children's Choir.
