| Spotlight on Our Community: Halifax Queer Ensemble | | |
The Halifax Queer Ensemble brings together Queer musicians of all experiences and interests. The group includes beginners, as well as pros who are excited to bring their skills into an entirely Queer space for the first time.
The group is much more concerned with building strong community bonds and making music together with friends than playing at the highest level or being an elitist orchestra, and they are striving to make playing in an ensemble a fun and joyful experience.
The group also prides itself on being a social outlet and schedules picnics, dinners, and outings alongside rehearsals and concerts. The ensemble also likes to challenge the public idea of what a band should do or where it should play by holding kazoo sing-alongs on Citadel Hill and pop-up performance workshops during pride.
The ensemble is open to Queer people who play any wind, brass, string, or percussion instrument, but has also included pianists, accordionists, and people who play ukulele and electric bass.
The ensemble will be performing at Saint Andrew's in May. Follow them on Instagram at HalifaxQueerEnsemble to learn about their upcoming events.

Sadly, Valley Pride was prompted to cancel their Queer Ski Day in late February due to a comment posted on their Facebook post “promoting violence and hatred against an identifiable group.” A suspect has been charged with wilful promotion of hatred, uttering threats to cause death and failing to comply with a probation order.
In a statement from the group, they said:
"We created Valley Pride to help queer people in this part of rural Nova Scotia thrive. For them to feel seen and celebrated. But your safety is equally important to us, as is your right to transparency and self-risk assessment for our events.
That safety was compromised this past weekend. Valley Pride partnered with Cross Country Nova Scotia and the Town of Kentville on a queer community learn to ski event. A social media post promoting the event received multiple harmful comments, and one directly threatening comment that we felt needed to be addressed with local authorities. Through consultation with them and the town, it was agreed that we would cancel the event out of caution."

As an affirming church, Saint Andrew's works to continually move toward being a fully open and accepting congregation. We recognize there are many places in the broader community where members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community face hostility and violence, and work to support the change necessary to make our world a safe place for all.
We send our support to our friends in the Annapolis Valley as they navigate this unfortunate situation.

Recognizing the growing understanding of the impact of clothing waste on the environment, we recommend shopping at secondhand or thrift stores.
Throwing away clothes has a significant and often overlooked impact on the environment. When garments end up in landfills, they contribute to pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, as synthetic fabrics like polyester and nylon are derived from fossil fuels and can take hundreds of years to decompose. Additionally, the breakdown of natural fibers like cotton and wool releases methane, a potent greenhouse gas, further exacerbating climate change. The fast fashion industry’s reliance on cheap, disposable clothing has accelerated this problem, with millions of tons of textiles discarded annually. Beyond landfills, the production and disposal of clothing also strain water resources, pollute ecosystems through dye runoff, and contribute to microplastic pollution in oceans when washed.

Live Art Dance: Graveyards and Gardens
Friday, March 6 at 7:30pm
Saturday, March 7 at 7:30pm
Graveyards and Gardens is a collaborative performance installation conceived, created and performed by composer Caroline Shaw and choreographer Vanessa Goodman with lighting design by James Proudfoot and audio design by Eric Chad and Kate De Lorme. Co-produced by Shaw and Goodman, this new work examines memory as a process of reconstruction rather than an exact recall of fixed events, embracing the various elaborations, distortions, and omissions.
Using soil as a mirror and metaphor for storing memory. A shared history by all of us. The impacts of our activity beneath our feet. Decomposition leading to regrowth and renewal. A resilience, a loop of decay and growth. Soil represents the past, present and future for our bodies.

Cecilia Concerts: Charles Yang & Peter Dugan
Saturday, March 14 at 7:30pm
The genre-defying duo of vocalist-violinist Charles Yang and pianist Peter Dugan presents a thrilling program that spans classical virtuosity, soulful resonance, and contemporary innovation.
A multiple GRAMMY Award-winner and recipient of the Leonard Bernstein Award, Charles Yang blends classical and electric violin with soul-stirring vocals, having performed as a soloist with orchestras worldwide and collaborated with top recording artists. Peter Dugan, a sought-after multi-genre pianist and host of NPR’s “From the Top,” who has performed with luminaries like Itzhak Perlman and Renee Fleming, brings his dynamic artistry to this program.
Both graduates of The Juilliard School, they serve as Artists-in-Residence at New York’s Kaufman Music Center and the Cali School of Music at Montclair State University. This performance fuses their classical roots with fearless improvisation, weaving a rich tapestry of sound that bridges musical worlds. Yang and Dugan’s synergy promises a dazzling celebration of creativity, offering an unforgettable night of music-making.
