Sunday Service - February 8

Transfiguration by Ukranian artist Ivanka Demchuk

This is Transfiguration Sunday, the final Sunday of the Epiphany season.

It marks this pivotal moment when Jesus' divine glory was revealed, first by God-the-Father, reaching out from the clouds, and then by regular-guy-father, reaching out from the dirt. There in the middle stands Jesus, seeing both, seeing what we see, and seeing our bewildering lack of faith.

It's quite the bridge, from the season of revelation to the season of Lent.

This Sunday, a wee baby's baptism might soften the bewilderment and bolster our faith. As will the prayers, the songs, and fellowship of the faithful. See you there.

Amalgamation Naming Update

To the Congregations of St. Andrew's, St. Matthew's, and Fort Massey:

Over the past few weeks, the Amalgamation Committee has been listening closely to you. More than 170 of you responded to our naming poll. This robust turnout, alongside the passionate feedback we have heard in conversations, reveals just how deeply this community cares about the future of our shared church.

Thank you for that gift of participation.

What We Heard

The poll results were remarkably close, but beyond the numbers, we heard something more important: we are not yet of one mind. The responses tell us that our three communities are still getting to know one another.

New Information

After consulting with the Region and legal counsel, we've confirmed that a permanent name is not required to legally amalgamate on July 1st. The legislative, tax, and banking requirements can all be satisfied using a temporary administrative name. This discovery has opened a new path forward.

A Decision for Unity: The Vote This Sunday

The Amalgamation Committee believes our new name should be a source of unity, not division.

This Sunday, February 15th, we will ask you to vote YES/NO on an interim administrative name:

"Halifax United Church"

This placeholder name is for administrative purposes only. It allows us to satisfy all legal, banking, and CRA requirements so that our new church can legally exist on July 1st.

Once we are legally amalgamated and worshipping as one body, we will launch a new, refreshed naming process—one that is grounded in our shared experience as a single congregation. We believe our true name will emerge more clearly when we are living and worshipping as one community.

We want to thank you for your honesty, your passion, and your patience.

By taking this time now, we are building a foundation for lasting unity.

In faith and hope,

The Amalgamation Committee

Spotlight on Our Community: Halifax Newcomer Choir

The Halifax Newcomer Choir seeks to provide music and language learning opportunities for all newcomers across Canada. Through community and song, we can build a country where all can feel informed, included, and ready to welcome others. The choir meets at Saint Andrew's on Tuesday evenings.

They are inviting the church community to attend their Celebration and Annual Meeting, which includes singing and refreshments!

Saint Andrew's Supports Social Justice: Affirm Library

We hosted the Pride Place round table in 2023 to learn what the 2SLGBTQI+ community needed from the church. It was recommended that we educate ourselves about the lives and experiences of members of the community, and so our Affirm Library was created.

We recently purchased a new bookshelf (big thanks to Jamie for helping Gail put it together!) that will be in the sanctuary on Sunday mornings. You are also welcome to drop by the church during the week to borrow a book, or sit and read.

We'd also love to get comments/reviews on the books to help others choose which books they would like to read.

Cookie Sale a Success

The UCW Valentine Cookie Sale raised over $900 for Sunday Suppers!

The UCW thanks everyone who donated baked goods, and everyone who purchased them! We hope you enjoyed your treats!

Coffee Table Volunteers Needed

Do you enjoy arriving to a friendly face and a hot cup of coffee or tea on Sunday mornings? Our coffee table is an integral part of our community and service, and is entirely run by volunteers.

If you are able and interested in volunteering and helping to keep the caffeine flowing, please reach out to Gail at info@saintandrewshfx.ca.

On The Stage at Saint Andrew's

The Stage at Saint Andrew's is creating community for musicians, and bringing the community to them as well. We’re not trying to take over the local neighbourhood music venues; they are already doing fabulous things. We want to join them! We’re small but meaningful. We’re small but magical.

Cecilia Concerts: Christian Paquette & Steve Cowan

Saturday, February 21 at 7:30pm

Flutist Christian Paquette and guitarist Steve Cowan present a wonderful program that spans a wide range of musical styles, blending classical, contemporary, and folk traditions. With Paquette’s expressive flute and Cowan’s precise guitar work, this performance celebrates a dynamic fusion of artistry, innovation, and tradition. Their unique pairing of flute and guitar offers a refreshing and intimate concert experience, rich in colour and contrast.

Nova Sinfonia with Dalhousie Collegium Cantorum

Sunday, March 1 at 2pm

An afternoon of profound beauty and reflection, Johannes Brahms’ A German Requiem is one of the great choral-orchestral masterpieces of the Romantic era. Unlike the traditional Latin Requiem Mass, Brahms’ work is a deeply human meditation on grief, comfort, and hope, setting German biblical texts that speak directly to the living.

From its opening words, “Blessed are they that mourn,” to its serene and consoling conclusion, A German Requiem offers solace, dignity, and a transcendent sense of peace—an experience that resonates long after the final note!

All are welcome at Saint Andrew's
