This Sunday, a beautiful communion service, rich in practice, prayer, and music. The choir will bring us into communion with a musical setting of the poem My Heart Soars, by Chief Dan George. Dan George was a story teller, actor, and chief of the Tsleil-Waututh Nation of the BC's Coast Salish peoples. The final stanza of his poem:
The strength of fire,
the taste of salmon,
the trail of the sun,
And the life that never goes away,
They speak to me.
And my heart soars
And the life that never goes away.
See you Sunday

We're pleased to share that the first meeting of Saint Andrew’s GLEE - Generations sharing Lived Experiences and Education - Club was a great success!
We gathered after worship, to enjoy a tasty lunch and good conversation while getting to know each other a little better. It can be hard to really talk to one another in the busy moments of Sunday morning. GLEE allows us to do just that.
As an Affirming Church, St. Andrew’s Halifax is committed to supporting queer and trans people who may feel cut off from younger or older generations. The GLEE Club provides a sober, well-lit, safe space where queer and trans people and allies can gather to share stories and experiences.
Watch for an announcement of our next meeting date in December, and come along!

Each year, September 30 marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
The day honours the children who never returned home and Survivors of residential schools, as well as their families and communities. Public commemoration of the tragic and painful history and ongoing impacts of residential schools is a vital component of the reconciliation process.
Both the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day take place on September 30.
Orange Shirt Day is a commemorative day led by Indigenous communities to raise awareness about the intergenerational impacts of residential schools on children, families, and communities. It honours Indigenous children who were lost in the residential school system.
The orange shirt symbolizes the loss of culture, freedom, and self-esteem that many Indigenous children experienced.
If you plan to buy an orange shirt to recognize the day, we encourage you to purchase from indigenous crafters or the Orange Shirt Society rather than big box stores.
This day reminds us that “Every Child Matters”.

Seniors for Climate - Halifax partnered with Kairos to hold the Seniors for Climate: Later Is Too Late event on September 19 at Saint Andrew's.
This teach-in included speakers, exhibitors, and information, with a focus on seniors, and was a great success.
Pictured above are organizers Linda Scherzinger (left) and Margaret Anne McHugh. Other Saint Andrew's volunteers, Joanne Roy, Marian Issekutz, Pat Kipping, and Mary Lou Harley, were also actively involved with the event.
KAIROS is ten Christian denominations and religious organizations working together with people of conscience for ecological justice and human rights locally and globally. The United Church is a member and the administrator of KAIROS Canada.
KAIROS Halifax welcomes new members. See Linda Scherzinger for more information.

With summer over and the return from vacations and cottages back to our usual routines, we're having a Welcome Back Potluck Lunch on Sunday, October 5 after services.
You are welcome to bring a main dish, salad, dessert, or whatever you would like to contribute.
We will need volunteers to help with receiving dishes in the lower hall before the service and clean up after the meal. There will be sign up sheets on the welcome desk this Sunday morning or you can contact the office to volunteer.
| | Office Closure on September 29 and 30 | | |
The church office will be closed on Monday, September 29 and Tuesday, September 30 in recognition of National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, and so the staff can enjoy an extra-long weekend.
The office will reopen on Wednesday, October 1 as usual.

Underground is doing something a little different this September with an event we are excited to call A Taste of The Underground. We're letting the cat out of the bag early by giving you the venue in advance of the show. Have you always been interested in coming to an Underground but unsure about saying yes without knowing where it’s going to happen?
Lining up with a very special presenters symposium called CanDance we are creating this one-off Underground where you know where you're going beforehand. We are excited to share with Canadian Presenters the talent, brilliance, community and heart that is so special here in the Maritimes! We invite you to dress up in all black + wear your best hat!
P.S. The usual rules still apply: you won't know who's performing ‘til the show happens and the show is as usual ‘phone free’ a la a true speakeasy. We look forward to seeing you Underground.

Cecilia Concerts - CelloFellos: Global Grooves
September 27
7:30pm
Canadian cellist Bryan Cheng, our 2025/26 Musician-in-Residence, and German cellist Leonard Disselhorst bring their exciting "Global Grooves" program to Halifax to open our 37th season. This performance blends jazz, tango, folk, and classical genres, showcasing the cello’s remarkable range and this duo’s chemistry. The program includes Béla Bartók’s spirited "Romanian Folk Dances," Bobby McFerrin and Herbie Hancock’s "Turtle Shoes," and a vibrant "Medley sur des thèmes roumains." Astor Piazzolla’s "Histoire du tango," Duke Ellington’s beloved "Single Petal of a Rose" and "Such Sweet Thunder," Tigran Hamasyan and Howard Shore’s "Toichi’s Mountains," and the explosive "Csardas III" by Milena Dolinova and Krystof Maratka sit alongside three evocative original works from Disselhorst. Drawing on their dazzling global legacy—from Bryan’s sold-out Carnegie Hall debut and collaborations with top symphonies like the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin to Leonard’s acclaimed performances with Sir Simon Rattle and honours at the Concours de Genève—their CelloFellos duo brilliantly fuses tradition with innovation in this captivating celebration of worldwide rhythms.
