This Sunday

There are good things happening in this city, and Brunswick Street Mission is one of them. For over 100 years the Mission has served and advocated for people experiencing poverty. Their history is entwined with our history, and the unending call of Christ. This Sunday we celebrate love for the neighbour, and the inspiring work of Brunswick Mission.

Spotlight on Our Community: RRANS Cooking Class

Under Rainbow Refugee Association of Nova Scotia's Rainbow Food Hub program, the Queer and Trans Kitchen Collective offers community-centered cooking classes.

Each session focuses on learning together by preparing a new meal guided by a community facilitator. Participants come together to learn, cook, and share a meal in a welcoming, affirming space. Attendees are invited to get hands-on by helping with food preparation, or they may choose to observe, learn, and connect at their own comfort level.

Recipes are shared with participants, and each session will end with everyone enjoying the meal together. This is a great opportunity for people who are enthusiastic about food, interested in learning new recipes, and looking to connect with community in a supportive environment.

Saint Andrew's Supports Social Justice: Scotian Shores

The Scotian Shores Clean Up Project commits themselves to cleaning Nova Scotia's shorelines, creating awareness of the plastic pollution crisis and connecting us all so we can make a bigger difference.

In the Summer of 2020 they started their journey of making the shorelines of Nova Scotia a little cleaner while creating awareness of the ocean's plastic crisis. Over the last six years their reach has grown from one caring individual into a community of good humans helping to inspire others to join!

Every day their team is growing, and together with many other clean up groups in Nova Scotia and the large scale clean ups they organize they have helped remove almost ONE & A HALF MILLION POUNDS of debris! Their collective data is sent to many places in hopes to create change and awareness.

Learn more about them here.

St. Matthew’s is hosting a Lunch & Learn at noon on March 15 with Scotian Shores, where they will talk about cleaning plastic from Nova Scotia shores and creating useful things from waste.

A light lunch will be provided.

Men's Lunch Update

It is great to see the members Halifax United Church coming together and getting to know each other as we work toward becoming one faith community.

Last Saturday, the men of St. Matthew’s, Saint Andrew’s and Fort Massey enjoyed food and fellowship at the Lunch for Amalgamating Men, and they are already planning their next get-together.

Details will be announced in the newsletters of the three churches as they are available.

The men also gave generously to a free will offering and raised $395.00 for Brunswick Street Mission.

Cecilia Concerts: Charles Yang & Peter Dugan

Saturday, March 14 at 7:30pm

The genre-defying duo of vocalist-violinist Charles Yang and pianist Peter Dugan presents a thrilling program that spans classical virtuosity, soulful resonance, and contemporary innovation.

A multiple GRAMMY Award-winner and recipient of the Leonard Bernstein Award, Charles Yang blends classical and electric violin with soul-stirring vocals, having performed as a soloist with orchestras worldwide and collaborated with top recording artists. Peter Dugan, a sought-after multi-genre pianist and host of NPR’s “From the Top,” who has performed with luminaries like Itzhak Perlman and Renee Fleming, brings his dynamic artistry to this program.

Both graduates of The Juilliard School, they serve as Artists-in-Residence at New York’s Kaufman Music Center and the Cali School of Music at Montclair State University. This performance fuses their classical roots with fearless improvisation, weaving a rich tapestry of sound that bridges musical worlds. Yang and Dugan’s synergy promises a dazzling celebration of creativity, offering an unforgettable night of music-making.

Cecilia Concerts: IDENTITY: A Song Cycle

Saturday, March 28 at 7:30pm

The Toronto world premiere of the song cycle IDENTITY was described by soprano Measha Brueggergosman-Lee as 'a truly astonishing happening; a feast for the eyes and ears.'

In early June 2020, during the Black Lives Matter movement, Torontonian baritone Elliot Madore opened up on social media about his struggles with unabashedly expressing his identity as a biracial person. Director Joel Ivany and Madore came together to find a way to present to the Canadian arts community the universal themes behind Madore's moving Instagram post. To give voice to these complex questions of multicultural identity, they turned to JUNO Award-winning composer Dinuk Wijeratne - whose genre-defying fusion of global musical traditions has established him as Canada's leading voice in cross-cultural composition.

Wijeratne's globally-infused score seamlessly blends Western classical music with an array of musical traditions, including those from South Asia and the Middle East, as well as modern Pop and Jazz idioms - creating a musical language as multifaceted as the identities it explores.

With poetry by acclaimed African Nova Scotian artist Shauntay Grant, whose powerful verses navigate the intricacies of 'self', the work features performances by GRAMMY Award-winning baritone Elliot Madore, bassist Tyler Emond, percussionist Nick Halley, and Wijeratne himself on piano. IDENTITY pioneers a new soundscape for multicultural storytelling—exploring how we choose to define ourselves.
