And, welcome to the first Sunday after the Epiphany - The Baptism of our Lord

The texts for the day may be accessed here:

We begin with the beginning of one of the most familiar passages in the Bible, the opening verses of the first of the creation myths found in Genesis. There is so much going on here and fans of the Babylonian story of Tiamat and Marduk (are there fans?) know that they are lurking here, but on a deeper foundational level... well, can't spoil the plot. The lesson from Acts - those who are taking our adult ed course on the New Testament will note that Apollos is in Corinth while Paul is away elsewhere... there is a letter to the Corinthians in the works, I'll wager once Apollos leaves town. Finally, we read from the opening of Mark's gospel, and while the details differ from the stories told by Matthew, Luke and John, one wonders why the lectionary cut off the opening verse that pairs with the creation story.. 'The beginning of the Good News...' Seems a natural fit, but I wonder...

Our readers for Sunday are Lisa Herlihy (Genesis) and Deb Shupe (Acts), and our prayer leader is Cheryl Thompson The seventh lecture in our adult formation series - addressing worship, order and oversight in the churches established by Paul - begins at 11:30. (I would wager that the name of Apollos might drift in at some point)

January Trivia Night

Friday evening, January 8 at 7 PM is the time and date for our next Trivia showdown. This month's contest is entitled "2020 Hindsight" which will consist of numerous questions from past quizzes in 2020. (If only you had written them down and studied...)
So, come prepared for a New year's trivial walk down memory lane and we'll see who gets to raise that cup of kindness.... and the cup of bragging rights.
The game room will open at 6:40 so you have time to register your team or individual 'trivia' name and do some last minute posturing and/or trash talking with your opponents.
Here is the link:

The latest Adult Formation offering is the lecture series Understanding the New Testament by Dr. David Brakke, based on his book. Dr. Brakke is the Joe R. Engle Chair in the History of Christianity and a Professor of History at The Ohio State University. Each lecture is about thirty minutes in length and will be followed by discussion of the material presented... at least as our starting point.
We convene on Wednesday mornings at 9 AM with a repeat on Sunday morning at 11:30. Here are the links:

Parish buildings are not open now. Only individuals specifically authorized for an essential service may be in them (e.g., Heartfelt food packing). Those authorized individuals must wear masks, must practice social distancing and must sanitize touch areas as they enter and as they leave. This is not a matter of personal choice and applies to everyone including volunteers, business suppliers, and contract personnel. If you note a deviation, you may politely remind the individual. If you are not comfortable doing that or doing so doesn’t correct the problem, please contact a church officer. A sign in sheet Is at each entrance. Please fill it out with your name, date and time in/out of the parish hall. Thank you.
