From Our Principal
The season of Advent provides many wonderful opportunities for families. The word Advent comes from the Latin  adventus , which simply means "coming." There are many devotions and traditions associated with Advent that help us commemorate the coming of Jesus into the world. Many families have an Advent wreath and light candles for each Sunday in Advent. Advent calendars mark each day as we count down toward Christmas. A Christmas nativity scene may be set out, leaving the manger empty until Jesus is born on Christmas day. Another activity is having a manger that children can fill with straw as they make little sacrifices. Christmas caroling is a longstanding tradition throughout the world. All of these little things remind us of what Christmas is really about and give us an anticipation for the coming of Jesus.
Each month our Comets prepare meals for the homeless that is distributed by our friends at Richmond Friends of the Homeless and Moriah Baptist Church. This month, our 6th graders are helping out!
Attention JK/K Parents!
TOMORROW, Wed. 12/5, we will host a "Coffee with Mr. Cruess" for current and future (2019-2020 academic year) Junior Kindergarten and Kindergarten parents in the Cafeteria from 7:45am - 8:30am. Hear from Mr. Cruess, Mrs. Menzies and Mrs. Horvath about transitioning to the next grade, upcoming assessments for the 2019-2020 school year and contract time...plus, your questions. (This session is for current parents at the school only.) Questions? Contact Gretchen Ridgely at gridgely@saintbenedictschool.org. TO REGISTER, CLICK HERE !
Lessons & Carols - Plan to Attend!
Please be sure you have your calendars marked for Lessons & Carols on December 11 starting at 6:30pm at Saint Benedict Church. This is a beautiful Christmas tradition at St. Benedict, and we want all of our students and parents to attend. For those who may be new to the school, it is an evening program of Advent carols and Scripture readings by our students, followed by the blessing of the St. Benedict Church Christmas tree, concluding with cookies and hot chocolate. The children are practicing for this event and are excited to sing for you!
The weeks leading up to Christmas Break are VERY busy! We will need lots of help to ensure all events run smoothly and successfully! Here are some suggestions:

DEC. 11TH - The PTO is still in need of volunteers for  Lessons and Carols . We need an event chair to keep things organized and some parents who can set up and clean up the cookies we serve after the program. We need your help to make this event a success!

DEC. 18TH - Give some time at the  Santa Shop  helping students find what they need.

Volunteer by clicking on one of the links above!

REGARDING VOLUNTEER HOUR TRACKING! A reminder to all: It is your responsibility to enter your hours in RenWeb. Each family is required to fulfill 20 support hours per year,   8 of which must be completed in the first semester . If you have completed these hours but have not yet entered them, please take the time to do so now. If you still need to fulfill hours, the opportunities listed above are a great way to satisfy them.  A fee of $40 per unfulfilled hour will be assessed on January 1, 2019.

Our NEXT PTO meeting is Thursday, December 13th. Please join us! We always look forward to seeing new faces!!
Faith in Action: Coat Drive!
The student council will again be sponsoring a used coat drive for the needy. Please send any gently used coats to Mr. Cichocki's room between now and December 17th. Thank you for supporting this worthy cause.

Karoling with Kumro - Thursday, December 20th, 6:30pm Please join us for Saint Benedict’s third annual “Karoling with Kumro.” This exciting event is open to parishioners and friends of all ages. We will continue our mission of evangelization by sharing the Good News of the Birth of Our Savior with our neighbors by singing Christmas carols. We will meet on Thursday, December 20th at 6:30pm in the Parish Center to enjoy fellowship, Kookies, and KoKoa, sponsored by the young adults of the parish. We will begin Karoling through the neighborhood at about 7:15pm, singing everyone’s favorite Christmas carols, led by our Choirmaster, Joel S. Kumro. Afterward, we will return to the Parish Center for more food and fellowship. This is a great event for the whole family; all ages and singing abilities are welcome and encouraged to attend. Invite your friends! Mass is available at 5:30pm, and the Sacrament of Penance will follow at 6:15pm.
