We are very sorry that we were not able to open school today. One of our water pipes had a leak, and we had to turn off the water in the building and the steam boiler so we could repair the pipe. I know the students were probably excited to have another day off, but many parents may have been inconvenienced by the additional day out of school. We really appreciate your patience. The pipe has been repaired, and we will be back to school tomorrow.

Help Make 2019's Gala a Grand Success!
CALLING ALL PARENTS!!
Our next PTO meeting will be held on
Thursday January 24th at 6pm
and will be our all-important Gala Planning Session. Many hands make light work, and we need everyone's talents to make our PTO's biggest fundraiser of the year a great success and a lot of fun for one and all. We have a silent auction, live auction, class art auction and sponsorships all needing help from our parent volunteers - that means YOU! From contacting local businesses where you shop for auction donations to helping your child's class create a one-of-a-kind artistic masterpiece for our art auction, there are MANY ways your help is needed. Pizza and drinks will be provided for all attendees! ALL PARENTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO ATTEND!

BOX TOPS
Bunny and I would like to thank everyone who sent in the Box Tops for the first collection date back in November.
Our goal for this year was to reach $1,000 for the year. To accomplish this we need 4000 Box Tops before the next collection date of February 19th.
I know this will be here before you know it but if we all pitch in I think we can not only reach our goal but surpass it. Every little bit helps our school so ask your family and friends to save them as well so we can support our children and our school. And don't forget the winning class will once again get to have an Ice Cream party for their hard work. Thanks again for the help!! James and Bunny Phillips.

Catholic Schools Week is fast approaching!
We want this to be a celebration of Catholic education, as well as a reminder of each student's individuality. With that in mind we have a tag day scheduled for each of the days that week. These tag days are free so start planning what your child will wear each of the days. Please review the tag day rules in the school handbook if you are in doubt about what to do.
Monday (1/27)
-- Super Hero Day -- students can dress as their favorite super hero.
Tuesday (1/28)
-- Career Day -- students can dress in an outfit that shows what they would like to be when they grown up.
Wednesday (1/29)
-- Book/Movie Character Day -- students can dress as their favorite book or movie character that day.
Thursday (1/30)
-- Spirit Day -- this is the day for students to show their school spirit by wearing blue and gold.
Friday (1/31)
-- We will have school mass this day so students are expected to wear their uniforms that day and be dressed for mass. Middle school should wear their dress uniforms.

IMPORTANT DATE FOR FACTS - MARCH 1 - TUITION ASSISTANCE
|
|
IMPORTANT Date For FACTS - March 1
All families should have their application submitted in FACTS by March 1, 2019, even if you are applying in Round 2 and your tax information will be uploaded later. While aid is distributed in all rounds, the total amount of Parish Sharing aid the school receives from the Diocese is determined based on the total need of applications in FACTS
on March 1.
Therefore, even if you are participating in Round 2, please have your application submitted by March 1.
More on Tuition Assistance:
All families seeking tuition assistance must complete an on-line application through FACTS and upload the required tax documents. There are two main rounds of tuition assistance. Returning families without business income are only eligible for Round 1 assistance. All other families are eligible for Round 1 or 2.
Deadlines as follows:
Round 1 - March 1: Families will be notified in mid-April (2018 W2s and 2017 Tax Return)
Round 2 - June 1: Families will be notified in late June (2018 W2s and 2018 Tax Return)
Please note, The Diocese of Richmond requires that each student apply for aid at only ONE Diocesan School.
Tuition Assistance Policy Updates as of the 2018-19 school year:
PreK Students are no longer eligible for Diocesan aid (Parish Sharing, McMahon Pareter, EISTC) but will still be considered for school based aid. The tuition of the PreK student will continue to be taken into consideration when determining Diocesan and school awards for other students in the family.
Who applies?
For Student's Parents/Guardians married, separated, or living together:
Both parents apply. If living apart, they submit separate applications.
Student's Parents/Guardians not married and live apart
:
The custodial parent the child spends the most time with applies
(This is the same guideline used for the college Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSFA)). In addition, the spouse of the applicant also applies. Other adults living in the household but not on the same tax return with the applicant need not apply, and since their income is excluded, their expenses are also excluded.

2018 - 2019 Saint Benedict Comet Campaign
Here’s where we stand: 56% of our families have made a donation!
We really need to hear from every family!!!
We are grateful for your support of our school and the sacrifices you make for your child's Catholic education. But it is important that our families understand that tuition alone does not cover our school expenses. In fact, tuition covers approximately 74% of our operating expenses (lights on, teachers paid, classroom supplies, etc.) and that leaves us with a gap of 26%.
That's where the Comet Campaign comes into play and where we need your support.
If you have not yet made a donation, you can do so online via paypal:
Thank you to our parents, grandparents and alumni for doing what you can to help bridge the gap!

St. Benedict Launches
Stall Catchers
Team
There is an amazing research project by Cornell University that uses crowd sourcing to help to speed up Alzheimer's disease research. By using a virtual microscope, you help to find a "stall" in blood flow in the brain of a mouse. Every "catch" is added to a growing database of research. They have already reduced the amount of time by half because of this global collective effort. What a unique opportunity for us to be a part of an amazing process for a potential cure! Mary Jo Brunner - our 4th grade teacher has launched a Stall Catchers Team at St. Benedict and invites your participation! Questions? Contact Mary Jo at
