Saint Benedict School Open House
National Catholic Schools Week is approaching and we are opening our school doors to celebrate.  We are inviting your family and friends to visit us to explore what Saint Benedict Catholic School offers.  We are proud to represent the best in Catholic education and would like to share that with our community, your friends and family.  Our Open House is scheduled for Sunday, January 28th from 12:30-2:30pm.  Visitors will hear from our principal, parents, students, and graduates and will enjoy light refreshments and a school tour.  For information and questions or to RSVP, please contact Lisa Yost, Director of Admissions, lyost@saintbenedictschool.org
From the Theatre Department
To piggyback on the success of "Yes Virginia, There is a Santa Claus," the Theatre Department will hold auditions for their spring production of "MacBeth" on January 12th.  All 5th - 8th graders are encouraged to participate.  Audition forms are available from Mr. Cichocki and must be returned by the 12th.  Auditions will be held during lunch periods on the 12th.  All rehearsals will be held after school on Mondays and Thursdays from 3-5pm.  The show dates are March 23rd and 24th.  The cost is only $20 and will be added to February FACTS payment.

Also, the Theatre Department is in need of a refrigerator OR four pieces of cardboard about that size.  Mr. Cichocki may be reached at jcichocki@saintbenedictschool.org for any questions.
Yearbook Photos
We need your school photos! If you have taken pictures while at the school, Friday Mass, or attending any other events or sporting activities, and would be willing to share, we are building a library of pictures to be used in this year's school yearbook.  For more information or to send photos by email, contact Linda Houghton at  ms.lkh@me.com . Thank you in advance!
Comet Campaign
Parents, help your child’s class earn an Ice Cream Social by making your Comet Campaign donation TODAY! Each class that reaches 100% participation will have an ice cream social with all the fixings. We’ll have ice cream thermometers outside each classroom celebrating our progress. Our goal is to have 100% participation from our Saint Benedict families. Gifts of any size are appreciated! When we ask foundations and businesses across Richmond to support Saint Benedict School, it is important to be able to say 100% of our families support the school above and beyond their tuition. If you have already made your contribution - THANK YOU. If you still need to make a donation you can make it online:  http://www.saintbenedictschool.org/giving/donate-now.cfm

Let’s help our Comets shine brightly!
Important Updates about Tuition Assistance
All families seeking tuition assistance must complete an on-line application through FACTS and upload the required tax documents. There are two main rounds of tuition assistance. Returning families without business income are only eligible for Round 1 assistance.  All other families are eligible for Round 1 or 2.

Deadlines as follows:
Round 1 - March 1:  Families will be notified in mid-April (2017 W2s and 2016 Tax Return)
Round 2 - June 1:  Families will be notified in late June (2017 W2s and 2017 Tax Return)
Please note, The Diocese of Richmond requires that each student apply for aid at only ONE Diocesan School.

Tuition Assistance Policy Updates for the 2018-19 school year:

PreK Students are no longer eligible for Diocesan aid (Parish Sharing, McMahon Pareter, EISTC) but will still be considered for school based aid. The tuition of the PreK student will continue to be taken into consideration when determining Diocesan and school awards for other students in the family.

Who applies?

For Student's Parents/Guardians married, separated, or living together:
Both parents apply. If living apart, they submit separate applications.

Student's Parents/Guardians not married and live apart:
The custodial parent the child spends the most time with applies
(This is the same guideline used for the college Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSFA)).  In addition, the spouse of the applicant also applies.  Other adults living in the household but not on the same tax return with the applicant need not apply, and since their income is excluded, their expenses are also excluded.
Middle School Attendance Notifications
Due to a configuration error, all tardies and absences have been showing up as tardies in the day summary. We have corrected the error going forward and are working on fixing it going backward.  The attendance is coded correctly in homeroom however is a translation error in the day summary.   We apologize that this error just recently came to light.
NEW Faculty Member
We are happy to welcome Mr. Kevin Corcoran as our new Physical Education teacher.  Mr. Corcoran has a Bachelor's Degree in English Literature from the University of Mary Washington. His work experience includes time in youth ministry and managing summer camps.  He is currently an active parishioner at Saint Benedict Catholic Church, and many of our middle school students will already know him through his work with the parish youth ministry.
PTO News
The Uniform Swap has been rescheduled to Thursday, January 18, so there is still a little time for you to get your very gently used uniforms to the school.

Congratulations Saint Benedict School families.  By simply doing a portion of your grocery shopping at Kroger, this week we received a check for $291.86.  This is an EASY way to support our school without purchasing anything you wouldn't be buying already. For those who shop at Kroger, the Community Rewards program gives a percentage of your purchases to the non-profit of your choice. Enrollment is required each year.  You may enroll by going to www.kroger.com/communityrewards and entering our school code: 82176. Thanks to all who participate!  Everyone doing a little really adds up!

Parents needing PTO volunteer hours but unable to help during the school day can earn hours by assisting with hospitality at the 8:30am and 11:00am Sunday masses at St. Benedict Church. Contact Mr. Cruess for more details.
