From Old World to New: How Classical Education Ignited Courage in Our 3rd Graders!

Last week our 3rd Grade students stepped back into the early 1900s for a powerful Ellis Island Day experience. Dressed as immigrants arriving to America, they learned how the U.S. immigration system worked and what so many families endured as they passed through Ellis Island in search of freedom and opportunity. With suitcases in hand and stories of hope in their hearts, our students reflected on the courage of their ancestors and the blessings of the country we now call home. What a beautiful way to bring history to life.

FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

Dear Saint Mary School Families,

As we continue our Lenten journey of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving, this week has been especially blessed by a powerful reminder of what it truly means to live the Gospel. On Wednesday, our students were graced with a special visit from the Hospitaller Sisters of Mercy, who joined us for a meaningful and informative assembly in the school hall.

The Sisters shared inspiring stories of their missions around the world, recounting how they serve Christ by caring for the sick, the vulnerable, and the forgotten in distant lands. Through their joyful witness and heartfelt testimonies, our students saw firsthand how the Church’s mission of mercy extends far beyond our own community, touching lives across the globe with Christ’s healing love.

It was a beautiful moment of learning and inspiration for everyone present. The Sisters’ example reminded us all that faith is not meant to be kept within our walls—it is lived through acts of service, compassion, and selfless love. In this season of Lent, their visit has encouraged our students (and all of us) to open our hearts more fully to the needs of others, both near and far.

We are deeply grateful to the Hospitaller Sisters of Mercy for their generosity in coming to Saint Mary School. Their presence was truly a gift from God.

May this Lenten week continue to draw us closer to Christ and to one another through mercy in action.

In Christ’s love,

A MESSAGE FROM YOUR PASTOR

Dear Parents of Saint Mary School,

I often say that Saint Mary School is central to the mission of Saint Mary Parish. The Church teaches us that the parish exists to evangelize. But what does evangelization mean? Evangelization is the joyful proclamation of Jesus Christ helping our children not only to know about Him, but to know Him personally, to love Him deeply, and to follow Him faithfully. It is forming hearts and minds in the truth of the Gospel so that our students become disciples who live their faith with courage and joy. Every lesson taught, every prayer offered, every act of charity lived within our school is part of this sacred mission to lead souls to Christ.

The beautiful fruit of this mission was on display last Sunday as our parish community celebrated the Rite of Election. Two of our Saint Mary School students, Markus Elatab (8th grade) and Lilianna Elatab (6th grade), signed the Book of the Elect and will receive the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Communion at the Easter Vigil. What a powerful witness to the grace of God at work in our school and parish! We joyfully congratulate Markus and Lilianna and thank all who have assisted them on their spiritual journey, especially Mr. Chris Pfirrman and Deacon Christ McNicholas who have the honor of being their godparents/sponsors.  Parents, thank you for entrusting your children to us and for partnering in this sacred work. Keep evangelizing beginning in your homes and continuing through the life of our parish and school.

With prayers for each of your families,

Father Jeff Kegley

Pastor

ALUMNI PROFILE

Hello! My name is Melanie Hahn, I am currently a first year law student at Mississippi College School of Law in Jackson, Mississippi. I earned a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice with a law enforcement emphasis from the University of Mississippi in 2022, coupled with a double minor in Legal Studies and Political Science. From 2023- 2025, I pursued a Master of Science in Criminal Justice with an emphasis in Policy & Practice at the University, where I also served as a graduate assistant. I am a proud graduate of Saint Mary School Class of 2015 and went on to attend Red Bank Catholic High School from 2015- 2019.

My years at Saint Mary School were packed with memorable experiences. I participated in cheerleading, basketball, and softball. I also expressed my passion for art by painting a mural of Mary and contributing to the hallway bulletin board, bringing more creativity to the school. While I could never choose just one favorite memory, some moments that stand out most are pizza days with Mr. Dolan (always remembering to bring two quarters), Scholastic Book Fair (buying posters and cool pens when my parents gave me money to buy books), laughing at recess with the best-of-the best lunch ladies, heading to the Junction with friends after a half-day, the excitement of Field- Day, Kindergarten Frolic, Christmas Assembly, Patriotic Assembly (learning all the state capitals–which has helped me more times than I’d like to admit), May Crowning, and, most importantly, coming together as a school for Stations of the Cross and Friday morning Mass.

To me, “Passionately Catholic. Academically Excellent. Filled with Joy,” is a calling to live with intention and heart. It means striving to use the gifts God has given me to their fullest potential, working hard not for recognition but out of gratitude, choosing kindness when it’s difficult, perseverance when it’s challenging, and faith when the path feels uncertain. St. Mary’s taught me that serving others—whether in small acts of kindness or meaningful projects—can make a real and lasting difference in their lives. That lesson stayed with me through college, shaping the way I approach every opportunity to help others, and ultimately inspired my decision to pursue law, where I can advocate for justice, give voice to those in need, and serve my community in a way that reflects the values I first learned at the school.

St. Mary’s was so much more than a school–it was the place that guided me to understand who I was and who I wanted to be. Within those walls, I was supported and challenged by amazing faculty and staff, who taught me lessons well beyond the classroom. They led with patience, compassion, and encouragement that allowed us to grow not only as students, but as people of character and faith. Their belief in us, sometimes before our own, became the foundation of our own confidence and strength. St. Mary’s not only prepared me for the next step in education; it grounded me in values that continue to guide me throughout life. For that, I will forever be grateful!

A note to future generations of Saint Mary students: As you sit in your classroom, surrounded by friends—some who will walk beside you in the next chapter of life, and others who may drift away after graduation—hold close every moment you share at school. Appreciate the laughter, the challenges, the “tough love” from your teachers, and even the quiet, ordinary days, for each memory shapes the story of who you are becoming. There will never be another moment when you feel the thrill of sharing a textbook with someone a grade above you. or when beating your own personal record on a times-table worksheet fills you with small, triumphant pride.

CLASSICAL MUSINGS

Last week we wrote about a well-ordered Catholic school, but what does that mean? Simply put, a well-ordered Catholic school sees Jesus as the Teacher and the classroom teacher as the lesson. If Jesus is the Teacher, then the school wraps everything that it does around the one command that Jesus gave” Go make disciples.”  All that it teaches, and models comes from a Catholic worldview which perceives everything through the teachings of Christ and the Church. This is very different from a school with a secular worldview that views a school’s purpose as a training ground for the workforce. We are forming scholars and saints.

This does not mean that all that is taught is religion, far from it. It means that the aforementioned teachings and morals are behind everything that is taught.  In addition, it means that the materials that a properly formed school chose to assist in proclaiming this word (textbooks, educational materials) need to be carefully chosen.   We have our own story to tell which is why religion is not just a subject, but part of our DNA, infused into everything. We are that sort of school and the results are amazing.
