8th grade and K "buddies" Albert and Margot on their way to Faith Families.

Principal's Message

“It’s not enough to just love the children;

it is necessary that they are aware that they are loved.” ~ St. John Bosco

Many thanks to all of our students and families who attended the Family Mass and Open House on Sunday! I especially want to acknowledge the Student Leadership Council for hosting the Mass, along with our altar servers and Children’s Choir. Our SLC also served as superb tour guides for the many prospective families we had visiting. What a great way to showcase the hard work and learning that happens at SPN!

Today we celebrate Student Appreciation Day. We are proud that our students truly exhibit respect, responsibility, reverence and lifelong learning. It is the partnership between the school and families that supports our students, your children, to be the best they can be!

I like to think that our students are very aware that they are loved at home and at school. Today is a day that they certainly feel the love at school as they enjoy FREE DRESS as well as a movie and treats with their classmates. Many thanks to our PTG President, Emily Libby, and the parent volunteers who made this a fun-filled day for our students. It’s often not a particular math lesson that most students remember but rather these “extraordinary” activities outside of the regular schedule where they experience their teachers and classmates in an informal and celebratory way.

We continue our week-long celebration of Catholic Schools Week with Wednesday’s Family Culture Day, the Oratorical Fest on Thursday at 1:00 p.m. in the church (parents are welcome), and Friday’s Staff Appreciation Day.

The quality, care and dedication of our faculty and staff cannot be overstated. I have had the pleasure of being part of schools in and out of the Diocese, and I am honored to lead SPN's exceptional group of educators and specialists. Our caring community begins with our teachers, aides, bookkeeper, secretary, yard supervisors, and extended care staff. They care about the students first and foremost, about their safety, well being, development and achievement. To that end, they continue with professional development to hone their skills and strategies to provide an innovative, well-rounded academic program. They care about the community – the school, parents, and parish. They go above and beyond to support the school and families, taking extra time for those who need it. They care for one another, celebrating successes and achievements and supporting each other in times of need. It is no wonder that our turnover rate has remained so low over the last decade. The dedication of this group of professionals is commendable. I am very fortunate to work with each and every one of them.

As I said at Mass on Sunday, St. Philip Neri School and Parish are truly one of the great blessings of my life. This community of faith, hope and love that raised me is still striving to be a model of the Gospel values through policy and practice, word and deed, for all of our community members. I can only hope that all of you, our school families, feel the same, and that St. Philip Neri is a blessing in your lives.

Warmly,

Ms. Thomas

Focus on HOPE: “I wait for the Lord, my whole being waits, and in his word I put my hope.” Psalm 130:5

Call for Readers!!!

The SPN School Advisory Board's Belonging and Inclusion Committee is excited to announce a series of initiatives to celebrate this trimester’s theme of HOPE! The series will include

  • reading a book on hope,
  • planting seeds of hope,
  • and sharing your family’s vision of hope.

The first initiative, a school-wide reading event, will feature Hope is an Open Heart by Lauren Thompson. The words and images in the book celebrate loving families, caring friends, and small kindnesses. To make the book accessible to our entire community, we invite any SPN community member (student, parent, teacher, staff, etc.) to read a few pages from the book on camera so that we can hear different voices and see different faces as we enjoy the book being read to us in a video.

If you would like to be a reader in the video, please check out the instructions and sign-up sheet (and email Ms. Kristen ksmeal@csdo.org with any questions). We ask that you sign up by Friday, February 3rd and submit your recording by Friday, February 17th.

SPN 2023 Spartan Masquerade Auction - You are Invited!

Spartan Sports Section

Hello Spartan Families, Here’s a recap of the games from this past weekend.
Girls Volleyball
The 8th grade team won their 2 games over the weekend, bringing their record to 8-1, good enough to be second in the league! They will play against the School of the Madeleine this Friday 2/3, 8PM at St. Anthony. When, not if (haha), our Lady Spartans win that game, they will be tied for a first place finish in the league and the top spot for the playoffs. Good Luck Lady Spartans!
The 7th grade girls volleyball team beat St. Elizabeth Blue in straight sets (25-16; 25-10). The girls had a lot of energy going into their last game of the regular season. The team started off trailing St Liz Blue in the first set, but never gave up! They prevailed to win both sets for the match. The team finished the season at the top of their league with an 8-2 record and will be entering the playoffs as the top seed.
The 6th grade team was idle this weekend but will have two games this coming weekend to conclude their regular season.
The 5th grade white team had great effort but lost to their cross town rivals, St. Joseph, and to the green team.
Boys Basketball
The 8th grade team had an awesome season, finishing strong and winning their last game of the season. Thank you Coach Kirk for all your efforts this year!
The 7th grade team won by forfeit over the weekend and their last game of the season is on 2/5 against the School of the Madeleine.
The 6th grade team lost another heartbreaker though the team competed well. Come out and watch them play and support the team on 2/5, their last game of the season!
4th grade lost 15-9 against St. Patrick Rodeo. It was a tough game with a lot of emotions. SPN was shorthanded against a full team, but the boys played hard, stayed positive and fought to the last second.
The 3rd grade boys played St Leo's and the game was neck and neck up to the last second!  The boys played great down the stretch with exceptional defense, teamwork and encouragement coming from all nine players with a final-second score to win the game. Two more games left and the best is yet to come.
Don’t forget to come out and cheer on the 8th grade GVB team as they face the School of the Madeleine and compete for the top seed and the coveted bye!
Cheers,
