Principal's Message

We Are One Body

Dear St. Philip Neri School Families and Friends,

There are several references in Scripture that speak to us as being one body in Christ. The texts of Corinthians, Romans, Galatians, and Ephesians all include a description of the followers of Christ as being one body made up of many parts. Over the past couple of weeks, I have witnessed how we as a Catholic school are part of a larger network of Catholic schools in our Diocese and our nation, indeed, internationally as ministries of the Catholic Church worldwide.

First, you may have seen in the news that St. Anthony School in East Oakland is closing in June. Having begun in 1877, this school closure is sad indeed, not only for the parish of St. Anthony but for all of those school families who love St. Anthony School as much as we love SPN. As a product of both Catholic elementary and secondary schools in the Diocese of Oakland, I am greatly saddened to see another one of our Diocesan schools in Oakland have to close its doors. I hope you share my interest and my sense of responsibility to assist our neighbors at St. Anthony in finding another Catholic school to call “home.” We are the third closest Catholic school to St. Anthony, and we will join at least five other Catholic elementary schools in welcoming those families and students to become part of our school family. Tomorrow, we will have some of the students who will potentially join us next year visit the classrooms for the day, and Thursday evening we will hold a special Open House for applicants from St. Anthony to tour the school and meet the Leadership Team.

Secondly, last week I was off campus for three days to serve on an WCEA Accreditation Visiting Team at Our Lady of Grace Catholic School in Castro Valley. I have served on Visiting Teams for other Diocesan Catholic elementary schools, and it is always so gratifying to work with other Catholic school colleagues as well as to observe and interview members of another Catholic school. We have so much in common, and it is so gratifying to see that Academic Excellence and Catholic Identity in our schools are valued and nurtured. I wish our students had the opportunity to visit other Catholic elementary schools because they would enjoy seeing the similarities and feeling a part of a much larger community.

Peace & Blessings,

Ms. Thomas

I would also like to take this opportunity to wish everyone Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Parent Volunteer Hours Available!

Hello Spartan Sports Fans!

Our 8th grade sand volleyball team is looking for a coach. We have enough players for a team but, unfortunately, do not have a coach. We do have one parent who can help but we need a head coach to lead the team. If you or anyone you know is interested please reach out to me directly so we can get the ball rolling. This is a fabulous way to get your hours done as well as help out our interested students.

Our Spring Sports picture day will be held on March 15, like last time the athletes who play a sport in the spring can wear their sports uniforms to school and will be taken out of classes for pictures. If you have any questions please let me know.

Join Our New Board Committee!

Hello SPN Community!

At our January SAB meeting, the Board unanimously approved a new committee, set to start next year: The Climate Consciousness Committee (working title, actual name TBD). The goal of this committee is to continue to develop and foster SPN’s commitment to the environment and social justice, as well as to sustainability. Pope Francis has called on Catholic schools to take a major lead in helping equip our students to prepare for the ever growing climate crisis. He outlined this need in his encyclical, Laudato Si’. The simplest way to distill what the Pope’s message is: Catholic educators need to equip the students with the skills and knowledge to effectively fight the climate change fight.

This spring, we would like to hold two meetings: one virtual and one in person. The goal of these two meetings is to establish a community of parents interested in this aspect of Catholic education, as well as develop a three-year strategic plan towards the committee’s first major goal: to become a Green Ribbon School by Fall of 2027. If you are interested, please fill out this FORM. Thank you for your consideration.

Thank you,

SPN SAB
