Communication Tips for Caregivers

Dementia/cognitive decline presents as both gradual and progressive. As the disease progresses and impairs comprehension, the relationship necessarily changes.

The old familiar ways of relating are being replaced and slowly slipping away.  For care givers, the adjustment can be confusing and frustrating as the old relationship gradually morphs into a new and often strange one.

The care giver will need increased patience and good listening skills. They must practice talking more slowly, and avoid interrupting while maintaining a calm attitude - free from condescension.

The care giver must be aware that acting out or “behaviors” typically represent the presence of unmet needs.

The care giver should adapt to their changing relationship. They will need to adjust the relationship to incorporate the changes caused by cognitive decline. The following is a sample of what to expect.

Overall they should expect an imbalance in the relationship as the care receiver’s dependency increases.

In conclusion, there is much that a care giver can do to provide a warm and caring environment in meeting the care receiver’s needs with grace and love.

It is essential for the care giver to be aware that the care receiver can’t process much of their surroundings rather than won’t cooperate.
