Unity is Supporting One Another
Dear St. Philip Neri School Families and Friends,
As we begin this fourth week of the school year, it is already apparent how our community comes together to support one another in a myriad of ways. Last Thursday evening the Room Parents– approximately 24 parents– met in the Library for an overview of the year’s activities and how they can support the individual classes in planning parties as well as participating in schoolwide efforts and recognition of the faculty and staff. Last night the PTG met to discuss and plan the Fall events: Halloween Coffee for Parents, the Book Fair, and “Breakfast with Santa.” If you’re looking for ways to earn volunteer hours, here is some insight on each of these events.
-
First and foremost, we need Fun Fair volunteers (see flier below) for September 21, 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. This is an easy and fun way to earn volunteer hours. Please sign up ASAP so we are confident that the day will be enjoyable for all.
-
The Halloween Coffee for Parents is very easy and can earn you 2 volunteer hours. Order and pick up coffee from a local vendor, bring it to school on time for the Halloween Parade at 8:15 a.m. PTG has a table to set up in the Yard, cups, and stirring sticks to go with the coffee, cream and sugar you picked up. You’ll be reimbursed for the coffee (with receipt). And you will put more smiles on parents’ faces as Halloween is a busy morning in many households.
-
The Scholastic Book Fair will take place in mid-November (17-22). The chairperson for this event, Benjamin Yee, would love to have a co-chair this year, and he definitely needs volunteers. Again, this is an easy assignment. Benjamin contacts Scholastic Books who will deliver the books to O’Brien Hall in easy to set up containers. Set up the displays and cashier’s table for the week. The schedule is typically from 3:15-6:30 p.m. daily that week, and it’s best to have #2 parent volunteers for a shift. You could do as few or as many hours as you want depending on your availability (from 1-15 or more hours for this event alone).
-
“Breakfast with Santa” has been a favorite event for St. Philip Neri School and Parish for many years. The founding chairperson “graduated” two years ago, so we need a committee of enthusiastic volunteers to re-create this event. O’Brien Hall has been reserved for Sunday, December 8 for this event, typically from 10:00 a.m. - 12 noon. The good news is that Santa is available for us that day, so we need volunteers to execute the following needs:
-
Ticket sales and advertising: #2-3 people ideally to make a flier, print and sell tickets – we’ll have electronic purchasing available as well– and take tickets at the door.
-
Decorations: we have a lot of decorations to start with: inventory what we have, envision the table settings and decor for the Hall, set up, clean up: this committee could easily be #2-6 people or more.
- Set up and Clean up can be done by small groups of volunteers
-
Food planning, preparations, and serving: easily #3-6 volunteers and more for serving, this committee will plan the menu, purchase food items, prepare breakfast, and serve.
-
Event Chairperson(s): #1-2 people who will oversee the above committees to ensure that it all comes together smoothly.
- NOTE: 6th, 7th and 8th grade students can be available to help with some of these committees, such as serving food, set up and clean up especially.
Many hands make light work. Consider one of these sub-committees, ask your friends to help you, and it will make it that much easier and more fun. We have a deadline of October 15 to have at least a core group of volunteers for each of the sub-committees to ensure that this event is a success. The next PTG Meeting will be on Zoom, Monday October 7, and will be devoted to finding the volunteers and committees for these Fall events. Please join us on October 7– Zoom link to come – to sign up and make these events memorable. Or better yet, email the PTG at spn.ptg@csdo.org and let them know which event you want to support. Thank you in advance!
A special Spartan shout out to a new parent, Jacquie Ramos, who saw a need and filled it: as her son, Joaquin, was working Safety Patrol, Jacquie grabbed a Stop sign and has been crossing families/students at Fountain and Jackson Streets in the morning. Thank you, Jacquie! Another parent, Elaine Mendes, recently volunteered to head our Lunch Distribution program, in addition to organizing our Cross Country Team. Thank you, Elaine! For the first time in several years, our School Photo volunteer was busy on Photo Day, but fortunately another parent, Maryann Hoang, graciously stepped up to fill the position in addition to our custodian and parent volunteer, Miguel Alvarado. Thank you, Maryann and Miguel! And mark your calendars because at The Fun Fair on September 21 from 12 noon- 2:00 p.m., Juana Barajas will again offer Fingerprinting Services to parents who want to volunteer when students are present. Thank you, Juana!
We are blessed by our wonderful parent volunteers. Plan ahead to volunteer and be part of the reason we enjoy so many community events here at St. Philip Neri School.
Peace & Blessings,
Ms. Thomas
