Exercise for Older Adults & Family Caregivers:

Everyone involved in public health says exercise is important for EVERYONE.

Especially for older adults with multiple chronic health problems, such as:

diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, Parkinson's, post stroke, and lung disease.

Where do you start (if you're not already exercising)?

Talk to your Primary Care Provider about exercises and physical activities that are best for you. During your appointment, you can ask what types of exercises you would benefit from and if there are any exercises or activities you should avoid.

How do you start once you've gotten the "green light" from your doctor?

It is key to take it slow and steady. Over-exercising can cause injury. It's best to maintain safety and a steady rate of progress.

Getting Started with exercise over 70:

You don't have to do everything at once.

To start, aim for some physical exercise

5 times per week.

The ultimate goal for "enough"

exercise per the CDC:

"Adults aged 65 and older need: at lease 150 minutes a week (for example, 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week) of moderate intensity activity such as brisk walking. Or they need 75 minutes a week of vigorous-intensity activity such as hiking, jogging, or running. At least 2 days a week of activities that strengthen muscles. Plus activities to improve balance, such as standing on one foot."
