When I gave the sermon 1 on September 15 th, 2023 about the need to respect our planet and 2 our need to participate in changing the trajectory of climate change, there were two things that I could not have anticipated. The flooding again this year in the Northeast Kingdom (from which we in Woodstock were blissfully spared) and the events of October 7 the the massacre of Jews in Israel and the tragedy that has since unfolded in Gaza. So much has happened since last autumn.

And yet, our small community of Jews, committed to healing the planet did not lose hope. As heartbreaking as the events have been, the death and loss and horror unfolding in the world around us, we continued to act on behalf of the planet. We continued in our work and our commitment to building a response to climate change, we channeled some of our energy and angst, our fears for our people both what might happen to us and what might be being done in our name and focused as well on Tikkun Olam, on repairing the world.

This afternoon, the team that has been working at the temple this week mounted our first solar panels. The reality that we are partners in creation with God and stewards of the earth is not lost on me. It was indeed a shehecheyanu moment. A moment of gratitude and of hope.

We feel an extraordinary sense of gratitude to all those that have worked tirelessly over the past 11 months to bring this project to fruition. A tremendous sense of gratitude to all those that have so generously contributed to making this project possible. The hours

and hours of planning and imagining, of calculating and working together to bring this project into being. Last weekend we had to the gift of praying together in East End park, that too a magnificent transformation of our beloved town, the ‘jewel’ created from

the ‘jungle. The reality that when we as neighbors and friends band together that we can reclaim, we can rescue we can indeed repair the world. With gratitude to God and all that made this possible, we feel blessed to be working in hope toward a more sustainable and healthier future. Nachamu, Nachamu, might we all be comforted in this progress.

Poetry session teaching with Dr. Rachel Korazim

live on Zoom

Thursday, September 12 at 10am

Rachel is a Jewish education consultant at the Shalom Hartman Institute in curriculum development for Israel and Holocaust education. Rachel opens for her audiences a window to Israeli society through literature; through stories, poems and songs of the best of Israel’s writers. Since October 7th, she has collected, translated, and taught the voices of Israeli and Palestinian poets. These special sessions on Zoom will provide a unique opportunity to read, discuss, reflect, and connect with the poetry, voices, and emotions of the moment through Rachel's teachings. We hope you will join.
