Buscaino, Captain Nancy Lauer Introduce New Wilmington Senior Lead Officer Roger Perez
Councilman Joe Buscaino and Captain Nancy Lauer, Commanding Officer of LAPD's Harbor Division, attended the monthly Community Watch meeting at Holy Family Church in Wilmington on Wednesday, August 29th, to announce that Officer Roger Perez would be the permanent Senior Lead Officer for the Wilmington area. Perez had been serving as the Wilmington SLO on a temporary basis, and garnered such support from the community, over 1,000 residents signed a petition asking that he be given the position permanently.
Captain Lauer reported overall crime is down in Wilmington 7% and burglaries are down 21%. LAPD Harbor Division also worked in partnership with with probation officers on Tuesday, August 28, arresting 14 registered sex offenders who had violated parole.

LAPD Deputy Chief Pat Gannon Retires After 35 Years of Service
A longtime veteran of the Los Angeles Police Department, Deputy Chief Pat Gannon was honored by the City Council on Wednesday, August 29 as he closed a 35 year career. He is the commanding officer of Operations South Bureau, overseeing 1700 sworn officers, 150 civilian employees, and has served 800,000 residents of South Los Angeles. He is a third-generation LAPD Officer, started in 1976 as a Police Student Worker, and steadily rose through the ranks of the Department.
He has been a longtime supporter of efforts to reduce violent gang crime through the use of gang intervention and partnerships through intervention agencies. In 2011, Chief Gannon was key in developing the Community Safety Partnership Program, between the LAPD and the Housing Authority. It established relationships, community programs, and youth outreach in 4 housing developments in East LA and Watts. These partnerships greatly improved the Department's relationship with the community, opened up lines of communication and created a mutually beneficial relationship that has enhanced the lives of many.
"It's pretty surreal that I stand here before you, honoring you on your retirement. It was you who introduced me to a law enforcement career," Councilman Buscaino said.
"I was a young Rec Assistant at Bagdonovich Park when you said 'Joe, you'd be a great LAPD Officer.' You took me under your wing and I can't thank you enough for introducing me to such a rewarding and blessed career with the Los Angeles Police Department."

Buscaino Attends 2012 Harbor Gateway Community Resource & Health Fair
Councilman Buscaino attended the 2012 Harbor Gateway Community Resource & Health Fair on Saturday, August 25th. Neighbors came together for free health screenings and information from various agencies and nonprofit organizations. Buscaino Recognizes the Efforts of Sharefest
Councilman Joe Buscaino recognized the efforts of Sharefest and its Executive Director, Chad Mayer during a City Council meeting on Friday, August 31st.
Sharefest Community Development is a nonprofit organization that was founded in 2006 to create an imprint of lasting positive change in our communities. They accomplish this through mentoring youth, fostering volunteerism in the community through service projects and establishing working coalitions made up of city leaders, schools, businesses and the faith community. Since its inception, the organization has mobilized over 40,000 volunteers to complete more than $7,500,000 worth of projects for Los Angeles County cities and schools. Additionally, Sharefest has mentored over 1,000 youth through its Youth Development Academy.
