Report from Le Petit Jardin
We are back up and gardening again!
We have lots to discover behind the big wall and gates on the East Terrace. Come on out and see what is growing and blooming now.
Saturday morning about eight o’clock is a time to come out and talk and work with us. The evenings after the sun is over the building is a delightful time too to wander around and learn what is here. You can find flowers, herbs, milkweed, and donations of your orchids on our Bismarck Palm.
It is amazing to see the changes week to week. You might also catch a glimpse of a caterpillar or butterfly. But many have left us to go north for the summer. I am sure they will be back before we know it and we will be ready with your help. Come check it all out and let us know if your ideas of what we can do next. And cut some fresh herbs to take home while you are here!
PS - There are scissors in that brown box.

Artemis: Return to the Moon by 2025
Speaker: Edward Grace
Tuesday, July 18th
2:30PM - 4:00PM
Ballroom
NASA’s Artemis Program plans a return to the moon and beyond before the end of 2025 and will include a woman in the crew who would become the first woman to walk on the moon. We discuss NASA’s plans for the Artemis Program. The initial Artemis I un-crewed launch occurred in November 2022. NASA has issued a contract to SpaceX to develop the Human Landing System to be used on Artemis. The long-term plan is to build a base on the moon from which to launch explorations of other planetary bodies. Our speaker was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his work on the Apollo 13 Mission and shares with us an inside view of the Artemis program and how it differs from the Apollo Program.

A Different Look at Florida
Speaker: James Sernovitz
Tuesday, July 25th

Florida is a world unto itself. Join us as we go from the glamour and excitement of Miami Beach through the primitive Everglades and follow the beautiful beaches of the Gulf Coast all the way north and west to the Panhandle. We then head inland, where most visitors, and many locals never venture, to visit the many unique agricultural sites that make Florida famous such as sugar plantations, orange groves, orchid greenhouses and many other remarkably interesting places.

Art Class with Instructor Kim Willis
|
Fridays, in July
2:00PM-4:00PM
Art Studio
$15/class
| |
During the month of July, we will be focusing on travel as a theme for our Independent Art Class. We will be thinking about past and potential future travel to create Fantasy Travel Posters. True to the fantasy theme, the concept is open ended, only our imaginations might limit the places we will go in our posters. Equally open ended is our media selection. Outer space is the limit on the materials we select. We may use collage, monotype, watercolor, acrylics or even crayons (if they seem appropriate). Our imaginations will take us (potentially) where no man has gone before!
Please join us in the art studio on Fridays, in July from
2:00PM - 4:00PM on the 2nd floor art studio.

Covert Interrogation in World War II
Presented by Thomas Eastwood
Monday, July 10th
10:00AM – 11:30AM

The value of intelligence during WWII is well documented. Codebreaking and deception operations greatly enhanced Allied military effectiveness. Less well known is the importance of intelligence gleaned from POW interrogations – many conducted at COVERT sites in U.S. and England. We will examine previously classified data about this little-known WWII history. Topics: secret interrogation and detention centers; PO Box 1142; PO Box 651; Camps Ruston, Peary, King; Dustbin; Richie Boys; Military Intelligence Service; interrogation tactics; MI5; MI9; MI19.

Peter the Great: A Czar Larger Than Life
Presented by Nancy Maxwell
Wednesday, July 12th
10:00AM – 11:30AM
Sheffield Theatre
Peter the Great dragged Russia, kicking and screaming, into the seventeenth century. Peter was larger than life; a towering man with towering ambition to match and a vision of greatness for Russia. No project was too big: move the capital city! Or too small: measure the length of men’s beards! To modernize the state Peter turned his hand to every aspect of Russian life. Was he a visionary reformer or a ruthless tyrant? This lecture explores the life and legacy of a most unusual czar.

Talks by Professor Adrian Kerr
"Prelude to the declaration of independence + the US constitution"
*New Date*
Thursday, July 13th
4:00PM - 5:00PM
Sheffield Theatre
The journey starts with the arrival of the first English colonists in America. Those that survived the first few harsh years soon turned their minds to administration and government. In Virginia the House of Burgesses in 1619 was the first to establish a form of
self-government for their colonists. However, over one hundred and fifty years were to pass before the next steps were taken. The new country needed a new flag and we discuss how the stars and stripes originated and developed.
