As I sit down to write this column for today’s newsletter, I want to share my thought process I go through in constructing what it is I want to say. I am respectful of your time and want to write something that leaves you with the feeling that the time you spent reading this was time well spent.
Leadership is what I want to focus on. Leadership is a big word that comes with a variety of different meanings to many of us.
One of the people I turn to when it is a question of leadership and what it means to be a good leader is Ken Blanchard.
Kenneth Blanchard is an American author, business consultant and motivational speaker. His writing career includes 60+ published books, often in collaboration with another noted expert in the field of leadership. His most successful book, The One Minute Manager, has sold over 15 million copies and been translated into many languages. And one of the best kept secrets is that his company is based right here in Escondido! Ken’s books on management and leadership have been bought by more than 21 million readers.
In researching Ken Blanchard and his leadership guidance I came across a missive written by one of his disciples that captured five of Ken’s top tips on leadership and want to share them with you. I have read several of his books and of course the most noted of them being his “10 Minute Manager” is compelling reading for all of us. Afterall at some point in everyone’s life we’re all called to lead.
Below are five tips on leadership gleaned from Ken’s writings:
1-Take a minute to set goals.
2-Catch people doing things right.
3-Feedback is the breakfast of champions.
4-None of us is as smart as all of us.
5-Humility isn’t thinking less of yourself, it’s thinking of yourself less.
My intent here was to share with you something that can lift you up and help guide us all to grow. I believe that we’re all works in progress with room to grow.
Ken Blanchard is a true leader and one of Escondido’s many treasured gems.
Cheers, JR
