Message from Our Superintendent

Greetings DUSD Families, Staff and Community,
Last week was full of excitement for our students and staff at DUSD. Halloween and Día de los Muertos celebrations were among the many fun learning activities that I enjoyed during my visits to our schools. On Thursday evening, Duarte High School hosted the 6th Annual Duarte Field Tournament at Falcon Stadium. I was pleased to present the awards to the top performers from the 15 bands that competed. Our own Falcon Band & Color Guard wowed the audience with a non-adjudicated performance of their field show. Kudos to new Band Director, Mr. Burke Shouse, the band members, the Band Boosters, families and our DHS Admin Team for putting on a top-notch tournament for our entire community to enjoy. This weekend, the Duarte High School Theatre Department gave three stellar performances of the play, "And They Dance Real Slow in Jackson." Bravo to our talented thespians and Director, Mrs. Leslie Bartlett. Also, thank you to everyone that attended our District Arts Exhibition the week prior that featured over 500 pieces of art created by students in Grades PK-12 from all of our schools. It is wonderful to see the arts are thriving across our district. Royal Oaks STEAM Academy Debate Team Soars
|
|
On Saturday, November 3, the Royal Oaks Eagle Debate Team, coached by Mrs. Teresa George, participated in their first tournament in the Rancho California Debate League. The league is comprised of competitive teams from private and public schools in our area that include Polytechnic, Mayfield, Chandler, New Horizons, New Roads, Sequoia and LILA. The tournament on Saturday took place at Chandler in Pasadena. The students competed in four rounds of debate on the following topics:
- Schools should require students to participate in daily school maintenance.
- The United States should amend the Constitution to include term limits for Supreme Court justices.
- Net neutrality does more good than harm.
Royal Oaks had three teams competing and each team took home two wins to earn the school a 4th place finish overall. This is especially impressive as all of the students on the Royal Oaks team were novice debaters for whom this was their first tournament experience. Congratulations to all of the team members: Citla Morales, Quin Ulrich, Jane McClure, Ayden Moreno, Theo Hom, Sidney Tsai, Camilla Leyva, David Diaz and Aine Kennedy. The team will compete next on December 1, in the LILA Debate Tournament and on March 16, in the Polytechnic Debate Tournament. Save the dates to attend! You can also follow them on Twitter
