Labor Day
“God created humankind in his image; in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. God blessed them saying: ‘Be fertile and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it.’” Genesis 1: 27-28
As we celebrate Labor Day on Monday, remember to thank God for the blessing of our work on this earth. If nothing else, this year 2020 has given us a new appreciation of work: to be able to do something productive, to provide for our families, to learn new things in order to do greater things.
This pandemic has cost many people their jobs, professions and careers that took years to establish are gone. Many parents are desperate to find any work to provide for their families. Many small-business owners are struggling to stay open and survive. COVID-19 has posed formidable challenges in hospitals, clinics, in the workshop and counter, in the classroom and the laboratory.
If nothing else, we’ll never take our jobs, our schools and our ability to go to the store and purchase the food we need for granted again.
On this Labor Day, may we give thanks to God for the ability to do productive, meaningful work for the good of the community and the care of our families – and may we resolve to do all we can to help our neighbors who are struggling to make things work in this difficult time.
We give you thanks, O God, for the world that you constantly hold in your hand and have entrusted to our hands. Bless the work we are able to do, work which is, itself, your blessing. May we work honestly, responsibly and generously; may our work provide for the wellbeing and safety of our families. Let the work we do lead to the building of your Kingdom of justice and compassion in this time and place of ours. Amen!

Icons: More than a Pretty Picture
Advent's sanctuary is blessed with some beautiful icons that were created by our very own Barbara Thornton. Join Barbara for a program on icons on Wednesday, September 30 from 7-8 pm. We'll learn what an icon actually is, and how it's different from a painting. We'll learn a little history--how long icons have been around and what they've been used for. And especially interesting--how in the world does Barbara make them? Barbara will Zoom us around her studio and show us the tools she uses to write icons. And why is it called writing not painting? How can we use icons personally to deepen our faith? So much to learn! Please join us.

Michael McCarthy
Nature, Joy, and Human Becoming
“The sudden passionate happiness which the natural world can occasionally trigger in us may well be the most serious business of all,” Michael McCarthy writes. He is a naturalist and journalist with a galvanizing call — that we stop relying on the immobilizing language of statistics and take up our joy in nature as our defense of it. And he reminds us that the natural world is where we first found our metaphors and similes and it is the resting place for our psyches.

NOTE! Click here to view a Back to School video prayer from Rev. Nancy.
We are so excited to announce that a new version of Sunday School will return in September. We’ve designed three programs that will nurture your child’s faith while keeping everyone safe.
Godly Play: Preschool –2nd grade
Our youngest parishioners start building a strong faith foundation with the sacred stories and language of our faith. We’ve recorded in-house Godly Play story videos that we’ll email to you weekly with parent pages to guide you. In addition, we created a Godly Play Story Library. You can borrow full sets of the Godly Play story materials so your children can work with the stories at home.
Living the Good News: 3rd grade - 6th grade
Older elementary age children are ready to build upon their faith foundation and expand their knowledge of our faith. This group is planning fellowship and fun – safe, outdoor gatherings to stay connected. Advent also provides Bridges to the Good News which follows the lectionary so it helps kids understand the week’s readings and sermon. This weekly guide also gives suggestions for prayers, discussions and activities that families can do together.
God, Church, and Me: Youth 6th-12th
Youth are growing up in challenging times. They are ready to start developing a more mature faith that will sustain and guide them through the teen years and into adulthood. This group will have a bi-weekly class (via Zoom, for now) that will explore living their baptismal convenant in our complex world. This class will also prepare interested youth for confirmation. In addition, there will be occasional Youth Council activities – designed by youth for youth.
Please sign-up to receive email communications with details about each program by emailing the following information to [email protected]: Child’s name, age, grade, and program choice, parents’ names, mailing address, and phone.
Christian education and formation for children and youth is one of the most important things we do as a faith community. Indeed, it’s one of the most important things you can do for your child. We are really excited to get this new version of Sunday School started. Please join us!

From time to time we all have messages to share about the health and/or well-being of our members. It is hard not meeting on a regular basis and we don’t get to share those important stories and concerns. Please read these notes, pray for the people, their caregivers and send cards. Phone calls or text messages are not always welcome. They take time and energy to answer, and the time to answer them is a precious commodity when you are dealing with a serious illness or recovery. We will offer updates as they are available. Again, please do not contact those on our list, except to send a card.
- George Lewis would appreciate cards from his friends at Advent. He is living in Firbank at Crosslands.
- Doug Keller continues to recover at home. We pray for continued healing, rest and no challenges as these new cells grow and multiply. He reports that he is feeling stronger each day. Praise God for this good work of healing.
- Jonathan Dash would appreciate cards. Please send them to him c/o the church address.
- Peter Jankov is at home. New medication seems to be working to keep epilepsy at bay. We pray for continued healing.
- Tori Robinson has been diagnosed with breast cancer. She is awaiting decisions to determine the way forward.
If you or someone you know would like to share care notes, please send them to: [email protected] Blessings, Nancy+

Do You Need Help with Zoom?
|
|
If you need a little help using Zoom to join a church meeting or gathering on your computer, iPad or phone, we have other parishioners who would be happy to help you get started. Just call the office, and let us know you need some Zoom help. A parishioner will give you a call and walk you through the steps. All church Zoom meetings use passwords, so we have not had any security issues. Please call if we can help get you Zooming.

Our Prayer Shawl Ministry continue to knit and crochet and bless us with beautiful lap quilts and prayer shawls. They are available and may be picked up at the church office by appointment. Please call ahead (610) 444-4624 and make sure someone will be here. They will be placed in a plastic bag for your safety. Blessings and peace be with you all! Nancy+

Funds will be transferred directly from your bank account into the church’s account either weekly or monthly.
