SJA Community Goes Red for Women’s Heart Health
Due to the winter storm last week, the Saint Joseph Academy community celebrated National Wear Red Day (typically observed on the first Friday of February) this past Monday.

Students, faculty, and staff dressed in red to bring awareness to women’s heart health as part of the American Heart Association’s ongoing Go Red for Women campaign. This campaign not only aims to bring awareness to the prevalence of heart disease among women, but also offers positive recommendations to support heart-healthy habits among women of all ages.

Pep Rally Recognizes Winter Participants
At Wednesday's pep rally, students participating in winter sports and activities were recognized. In addition, the community was treated to a performance by the SJA Dance Team and enjoyed a friendly dodgeball competition in pursuit of the spirit trophy!

Each class dressed up in a seasonal theme: Class of 2025 (fall), Class of 2024 (spiring), Class of 2023 (winter) and Class of 2022 (summer).

All-School Mixer Next Friday
The all-school mixer will take place next Friday, February 18, 8-10 p.m. in the Academy Center. Tickets are $10 each.

Thank You for supporting Hoodies for the Homeless!
We are humbled by the generosity of those who supported our Hoodies for the Homeless Collection during Catholic Schools Week! Two non-profit organizations that help those in need are the beneficiaries of these much-needed sweatshirts. More than 250 hoodies were donated to Laura’s Home, a women's crisis center and the Labre Ministry at Saint Ignatius High School, which serves meals to the homeless on Cleveland's streets every Sunday night.
2022-2023 School Year Class Registration
It’s hard to believe it’s time to schedule classes for next year! To access the 2022-2023 Course Catalog visit the SJA website’s Academics page.

Spotlight: Mrs. Kristen (Schuler) Barrett
International Day of Women and Girls in Science

In recognition of International Day of Women and Girls in Science on February 11, we are shining a spotlight on Mrs. Kristen (Schuler) Barrett, who has taught classes in STEM at Saint Joseph Academy for the past six years. In addition to teaching Physical Science and Honors Physics classes, Mrs. Barrett is a co-moderator of SJA’s Robotics Club. She recently received her Master’s Degree in Physics Education, having double-majored in Mathematics and Physics at Cleveland State University.

Recently, Mrs. Barrett and Mr. Bryce Ormiston received an Engineering Design Challenge Award from NASA Glenn Research Center’s Office of STEM Engagement. In partnership with NASA Glenn, Mrs. Barrett and Mr. Ormiston will collaborate with 9th grade students to complete this year’s Engineering Design Challenge, “Keep it Cool”, which involves designing, testing, and improving systems to maintain cold storage within a simulated cryogenic propellant tank. Mrs. Barrett actually helped to design science and engineering curricula while she was working as an undergraduate intern at NASA Glenn Research Center, so she is excited to now be able to share these resources with her students at SJA. Saint Joseph Academy is the only private high school in the Cleveland area to receive this award.

Mrs. Barrett says that teaching at SJA is her “dream job” because it allows her to work with young women in STEM within a faith-based environment. She enjoys accompanying students as they grow in knowledge and confidence, both in the sciences and as women of unifying love. Whether discussing the age of the universe or the physical laws that operate within it, she emphasizes to her students that faith and science need not be seen as being at odds with one another. “The more we understand the science of our universe, the more we can learn about our God who created it, and who created each of us,” she explained.

Mrs. Barrett and her husband, who is a teacher at St. Edward High School, enjoy supporting their students by attending sporting events, performances and chaperoning dances together. She is also an avid cyclist and enjoys biking the local Metroparks.

We are grateful for Mrs. Barrett and the other talented women in STEM at Saint Joseph Academy!

Varsity Bowling Wins the Handicap Division in the GCIBL
This past Saturday the Jaguars wrapped up the regular season with the final day of play in the Greater Cleveland Interscholastic Bowling League (GCIBL). The high bowler for the Jaguars was Caprice Hofstede with a 301 series for two games.

The award ceremony for the league followed. The Jaguar Varsity team brought home the trophy for winning the handicap division. The GCIBL Handicap is all about bowling over your average and whoever bowls the highest and most often over their average. The team that wins handicap is usually the most improved as well, and that definitely describes this team.

Varsity Basketball Falls to Westlake in Defensive Battle
On Monday evening, the Varsity basketball team traveled to Westlake High School for an evening matchup against the Lady Demons. Westlake is a very strong defensive team, so the Jaguars knew they would be in for a low-scoring, defensive battle all evening.

The first quarter ended with the Demons up 12-8 over the Jaguars. SJA closed the gap and gained a little bit of momentum back in the second quarter, but Westlake’s defense held them to only 6 points in the third period. Lizzy Lenahan '22 kept the Jags in the game with 14 points on a couple of layups, free throws, and a 3-pointer.
