St. John's Mission Statement

St. John's is a Christian community that intentionally gathers

to experience God's love through Episcopal worship, education,

fellowship, and ministry to the wider community.

For the Sake of God's Kingdom

As followers of Jesus, we are heartbroken and in anguish for these latest acts of senseless and unspeakable violence. And so, we pray. We pray for the eleven dead and their loved ones, we pray for the eight wounded and their families, we pray for the witnesses and the survivors, we pray for the first responders, we pray for the officials who must deal with the aftermath, we pray for the people of Buffalo, New York, and Laguna Woods, California, we pray for the perpetrator and his family, and we pray for this nation.

As followers of Jesus, we also know that prayer—while critically needed—is not enough on its own. Not when the tally of mass shootings for 2022 is up to 198 and not when the Buffalo incident is reported to be a racially motivated act of white supremacy.

FAITH FORMATION

Christian Initiation

Do you desire to make a commitment of faith in the Episcopal?

You are invited to celebrate the sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation

or the rites of Reception or Reaffirmation of Baptismal Vows

Holy Baptism

Holy Baptism is full initiation into Christ’s Body, the church. Baptism creates a bond which indissoluble and unrepeatable.

Our church recognizes all baptism performed with water in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

We do not repeat a baptism that was validly celebrated.

Those who are baptized are thereby admitted to Holy Communion. Baptized infants should receive Holy Communion regularly.

Confirmation, Reception, Reaffirmation of Baptismal Vows

Confirmation is the renewal of baptismal vows for those baptized at an early age who desire to make their first adult affirmation of faith. It is a sacrament of mature adulthood.

Reception is a renewal of baptismal vows for those who have made a mature affirmation of faith in any other Christian church and who now wish to join the Episcopal Church.

Reaffirmation of Baptismal Vows is a renewal of baptismal vows

for those who were baptized as adults without laying on of hands by a bishop,
for those who have made a mature affirmation of faith but have returned from a lapse of Christian practice,
for those concluding a period of personal or pastoral crisis, and
for those who are experiencing a new call from God to grow in faith or to begin a new ministry

OUTREACH AND EVANGELIZATION

Outreach Ministry

Feel passionate about helping the homeless, but don’t want to hand out money on the streets? Here’s an idea!

Blessings in a Bag

St John’s will begin collecting and packing 1 gallon zip top bags with items that are helpful for our neighbors living outside. A few bags can be kept in your car to hand out when you come across a homeless person in need. We will also provide a prayer card from the church, so they know we care! Click here for a list of items you can donate to fill the bags.

Monday through Thursday from 9am to 3pm.

If you are not able to bring them, please contact the parish office, and we will pick up the items from your home.

Italian Dinner and Fundraiser Update

Thank you to everyone who worked to make our Italian Dinner and Fundraiser a success. We raised $2504. Thank you to all who organized the meal, decorated Nale Hall, donated prizes for the drawing and auction, and coordinated the prizes,

and thank you to all who bought tickets and came to the event!

Please invite your friends and families to this event as we recreate a St. John’s favorite tradition from the past in this year of our Centennial Celebration. Lay Eucharistic Ministers

St. John's has four Lay Eucharistic Visitors who are commissioned to bring Holy Communion to anyone requesting a visit.

If you are not able to join us for our celebration of Holy Eucharist, we will bring Holy Communion to you. You may call the parish office (619-422-4141) and request communion to be brought to you by one of our Eucharistic Visitors.

Pentecost Sunday Potluck

Pentecost Sunday is on June 5th. Following the service, we will have our traditional international potluck to which parishioners bring ethnic foods representing their heritage. Please sign up in the narthex to indicate how many people will be attending and what kind of dish you will bring.

Hospitality Hosts Needed!

Please join us for hospitality after the Sunday morning worship service.

Refreshments should be individually portioned or wrapped, or served by a server who is the only one touching the serving implements. Coffee and Clean-up are done by our Sexton, Ryan Attaway.

Prayer Quilt Ministry

The leaders of the Prayer Quilt Ministry would like to remind

of prayer and support. This important ministry brings comfort and healing to many people who are suffering with illness.

Daughters of the King Prayers

If you have a special prayer request for Daughters of the King, you are invited to fill out a prayer card, found in the narthex. Drop your prayer request in the church-shaped box or in the offering plate. These requests are confidential and are separate from our printed parish prayer lists.

If you would like to add someone to St. John's emergency contact list in case of such an emergency, please contact Maria in the office (619-422-4141 or [email protected]). Please provide your name, the name of your emergency contact, their relationship to you and their phone number. Any information you provide will be stored carefully in order to protect the privacy of your contact's information.

Beware of Scam Emails & Phishing Attempts

If you receive a suspicious email from an address that seems to be Rev. Roger or another parishioner asking for a favor, it may be a phishing attempt. Scam emails mimic addresses we are familiar with and are very often full of grammatical errors.

Rev. Roger will never email you asking for funds or financial support by way of gift cards. If you receive an email that seems suspicious, do not open it or respond to it. Delete it immediately.

Phishing is a cyber attack that uses disguised email as a weapon. The goal is to trick the email recipient into believing that the message is something they want or need - a request from their bank, for instance, or a note from someone in their company - and to click a link or download an attachment.

Bless St Luke's Africa Trip and Delight in a Chef-Designed Meal

Have you joined us for one of St Luke's fundraiser dinners in our patio garden yet? Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month

At the 2021 Diocesan Convention, Resolution 21-04 Becoming a Beloved Community by combatting anti-Asian/Pacific Islander American violence, bias and racism was adopted. As part of that resolution, the diocese agreed to lift up the stories of Asians, protect Asians from racist persecution, and nurture understanding of Asian peoples and cultures through prayer and liturgy, among other ways.

Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month (AAPI Heritage Month) is an annual celebration that recognizes the historical and cultural contributions of individuals and groups of Asian and Pacific Islander descent to the United States. Read More

Episcopal Evangelism 101

Evangelism 101 is a not-so-basic training designed to introduce a fresh, humble, effective and Episcopal approach to the spiritual practice of evangelism. The 90 minute online training on May 26, from 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm, will include stories, small group exercises, and Q& A time. Attendees will also be sent a Participant Guide + Handouts that include a host of resources for sharing the Jesus Movement, redefining evangelism, organizing a revival, sharing our stories, walking the neighborhood, improving hospitality, and more. Also, you will be given a preview of Embracing Evangelism, a training that any congregation can host on their own.
