Sowing Seeds of Hope

"As for the seed in the good soil,

these are the ones who, when they hear the word,

hold it fast in an honest and good heart, and bear fruit with patient endurance."

Luke 8:15 (NRSV)

Who has sown seeds of hope in me?

In whom have I sown seeds of hope?

Stewardship Letter from Rev. Roger

Stewardship Reflection

My name is Teri Tatu and I have been a parishioner at St. John’s for about six years. You won’t see me in church every Sunday because I only live in Chula Vista part time. I spend part of my time in Arizona where my grandchildren live. So I travel back and forth frequently. I always look forward to my time in Chula Vista because that’s when I return to St. John’s for services on Sunday and working with Debbie and the ladies of St. John’s on the quilt ministry.

Today I want to write about the church members at St. John’s because they plant seeds of HOPE for me.

Lately the political climate has divided our country and made so many people hateful towards one another. It’s difficult to have the TV on and constantly hear negative comments. Our family has different political views right now which makes it awkward when we are together. Even though we might not be voting for the same people it’s important that we respect each others’ views. However, it doesn’t always feel that way.

When I attend church I feel at peace because the church members are so kind and genuine. We have the best rector, vestry, choir, and members of St. John’s. The parish makes me feel welcome and restores my faith in humankind. It is so refreshing to see people helping one another. The parishioners at St. John’s are so generous and kind. Everyone works together to help those in need around our community. St. John’s plants seeds of HOPE to make this world a better place for ALL. I am so thankful my life is blessed by all of you!

Several weeks ago, we blessed a quilt for Dana Mackay, a relative by marriage of Bill and Diane Gustafson. She had been diagnosed with an aggressive lymphoma that only 75 percent survive.

Last week Dana’s oncologist told her that her tumor has gone from 14 cm to 1 cm! She is in remission! Praise God!

ACROSS THE CHURCH

51st Diocesan Convention Recap

By: Chris Tumilty, Director of Communications

Our diocesan family gathered at Convention for an inspiring weekend at St. Margaret's in Palm Desert. This year’s Convention offered much more than the important business of elections and resolutions. We came together for shared worship, celebrated community over a delightful dinner, and joined in a solemn candle-lit vigil for gun safety, honoring lives lost and committing ourselves to advocacy for peace. The screening of The Philadelphia Eleven offered a poignant look at the trailblazing women who shaped our church, inspiring deep reflection on our history and our future.

Throughout the weekend, the spirit of unity and dedication to our mission was palpable, as we honored the work of the church and discerned our path forward. In worship, fellowship, and service, we embraced both our joyful connections and our shared responsibilities, creating lasting memories and renewed commitments. Read More

Presiding Bishop’s Response

to the Resignation of the Archbishop of Canterbury

This week, Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby announced that he will step down in light of the findings of a report on abuse perpetrated by John Smyth, a lay minister in the Church of England.

Presiding Bishop Sean Rowe said, “Today I am praying for the people of the Church of England, for our siblings in the Anglican Communion, and for all victims and survivors of abuse, especially clergy abuse. Abuse in any form is horrific and abhorrent, and it grieves me that the church does not always live up to its ideal as a place where all of God’s children are safe.

“I commend Archbishop Welby for calling the Church of England to address its safeguarding failures, and I pledge the Episcopal Church’s commitment to this critical task in our own contexts and in the Anglican Communion. The church must be a refuge where people can come with the deepest wounds and vulnerabilities and be nurtured, respected and never abused.”

Diocesan Service and Justice Coalition Zoom
