Sowing Seeds of Hope

"As for the seed in the good soil,

these are the ones who, when they hear the word,

hold it fast in an honest and good heart, and bear fruit with patient endurance."

Luke 8:15 (NRSV)

Who has sown seed of hope in me?

In whom have I sown seeds of hope?

TRIBUTE TO THE REV. MICHAEL KAEHR

I am honored to share a few words today about Fr. Michael Kaehr’s service to St. John’s as rector, and later as generous benefactor. Fr. Michael was called to St. Johns in 1988, following the sudden death of my dad,

Fr. Jerry Graves, who had been the priest here for close to 20 years. The first thing that struck me was his excellent singing voice, which he used to chant the service music and lustily sing the hymns. I was interested to learn that he had previously been a music educator, which was also my profession, but he had several years previously felt the call to the ministry. The combination of his musicianship paired with his loving and giving spirit became one very special priest who served St. John’s in so many wonderful ways over the next 10 years.

Something else I noticed about Fr Michael through the years he served was his strength to face obstacles with faith, dignity and resilience. I always felt he could bring our congregation through any rough waters. When the day came that we lost our church buildings to the fire in 1994, Fr. Michael took the bull by the horns and led us through the difficult days of destruction and sorrow to the joyful days of rebuilding and joy. His personal attention to the design of many of the architectural aspects of our new sanctuary and surrounding structures resulted in St. John’s being one of the most spectacularly beautiful churches in our diocese. His act of forgiveness toward the person who had set the fire was a lesson in humility to us all. With Fr. Michael as our shepherd, St. Johns rose from the ashes and still stands today.

Following his tenure here as priest, Fr. Michael married his true love, Nancy, who was the loveliest and kindest woman you could ever imagine. Together they supported not only St. John’s, but so many other churches, charities, and people in so many ways. Since Nancy’s passing in 2018, Fr. Michael to this day continues to exhibit the kindness and generosity of both himself and his beloved wife, with his many gifts for the restoration and welfare of St. John’s. And he does it all quietly and with no expectations for recognition. So, today we thank you. The people of St. John’s are so grateful for all you have done for us through the last 36 years. You are a true example of what God calls all of us to be. Thank you, Fr. Michael. We love you.

Cycle of Prayers for the Church

In the Diocesan Cycle of Prayer, we pray for the Clergy and people of St. Paul’s, Yuma and for migrants and all who minister to them:

Lord Jesus, when you multiplied the loaves and fishes, you provided more than food for the body, you offered us the gift of yourself, the gift which satisfies every hunger and quenches every thirst! Your disciples were filled with fear and doubt, but you poured out your love and compassion on the migrant crowd, welcoming them as brothers and sisters. Amen.

In the Anglican Cycle of Prayer, we pray for The Church in Wales.

In the Military Cycle of Prayer, we pray for USS Chafee (DDG 90).
