ADMINISTRATION AND VESTRY | |
“Raise the Roof”
St. John's Capital Campaign
A letter from Bob Dunn, Co-Chair
Dear Friends in Christ,
As you are undoubtedly aware, the church, Nale Hall, and Graves Pavilion, were recently re-roofed. Owing to several leaks, this was badly needed. The cost was estimated at $175,000. We truly did not know how we were going to pay for the work.
As we were fretting over that, out of the blue, St. John’s received the unrestricted Weizer Family Trust totaling about $945,000. The Vestry, in consultation with the diocese, decided to look to the future of the church by investing that money rather than using it for routine operating expenses. This investment will allow St. John's to be financially stable and success for years to come. Working through the Diocese and the Episcopal Church Foundation, that has been done.
Owing to the urgency of the roof repairs, the Vestry elected to hold back, or “borrow” from ourselves, $170,000 from that trust money to pay for the roofing. This was done with the intention of repaying that “loan” of $170,000 to our own investment account. To enable that repayment, it was decided to start a capital campaign to raise the $170,000.
Coincident to all of this, 11 of St. John’s original HVAC units need to be replaced within the next very few years. As the climates continues to get hotter, this becomes more critical, and the associated cost is estimated at $325,000. Owing to this additional need, it was decided to set the goal of the Capital Campaign at $500,000 over a 3-year period.
We are now about 9-months into the 3 years, with $145,371 contributed or promised. As noted, to aid in the future financial stability of St. John’s, the first $170,000 will be invested in the St. John's Endowment for future earnings.
If you have already contributed to the Capital Campaign, we offer a sincere thank you -- and remember, you may always contribute more over the next 27 months.
If you have not yet contributed, we would truly appreciate your support. Contributions may be made via a direct check to the church or by going to St. John's website at
saint-johns.org and clicking on the GIVE NOW button. To register intended future donations, there are forms on the Capital Campaign table in the narthex.
Sincerely,

Diocesan Convention is Coming!
By: Chris Tumilty, Director of Communications
The Episcopal Diocese of San Diego’s 50th Annual Diocesan Convention will be held on November 8-9, 2024, at St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church in Palm Desert. Far more than a business meeting, the Convention offers a rich blend of fellowship, celebration, and spiritual renewal.
The Convention kicks off with pre-convention, optional activities on Friday, November 8, designed to deepen attendees’ connection to both nature and the community. The day begins with a 2.2-mile hike along the scenic Cross Trail, led by Father David Burgdorf. For those seeking hands-on service, the Food Loop program with Chet Hecht offers the chance to engage in meaningful work, including food packing, composting, and community gardening. Participants can also enjoy a reflective Labyrinth Walk, offered by the Daughters of the King in the peaceful courtyard of St. Margaret’s. Read More

Knowing Yourself: Ministry from a Place of Self-Awareness
September 28th, 9:00 am - 12:00 pm
This new workshop premiered at Leadership Academy. Knowing Yourself is designed to equip individuals to better see their differences and divergences as strengths to be utilized in living into their unique calling as a part of the Body of Christ. Attendees will better understand their blind spots and name identities that no longer serve them while reclaiming aspects that are most authentic and beloved. Knowing Yourself utilizes the sociological concept of “social location” to expand the lens through which we see Christ in the world and each other.
