Meet a Manatee
Welcome to the Manatee Capital of The World! Let an experienced guide take you through the crystal clear waters of our local springs where you can swim alongside these gentle giants!
| | |
Nowhere else will you find more manatees than here in Crystal River, Homosassa, and the waters of Florida’s Citrus County. Each winter between 500 and 1000 manatees are drawn here by three first magnitude spring systems, each with a constant temperature of 72° to 74° F (23° C). It is the most important natural warm water refuge for manatees along the Gulf Coast of Florida. Even in the warm summer months, up to 100 manatees remain here all year.
It’s also one of only a few places in the world where you can have an the in-water experience of swimming with manatees in their own natural environment. It’s a privilege and responsibility we take seriously and our in-water guides are trained to make sure we and you treat this beloved threatened species with the utmost care and respect. All swimmers on manatee tours learn their “Manatee Manners” before ever getting in the water.

Mortgage Rates Ease After Five-Week Climb | |
WASHINGTON – The average long-term U.S. mortgage rate eased this week, a modest relief for prospective homebuyers who have been facing higher borrowing costs as mortgage rates climbed to the highest level in nearly seven months.
The benchmark 30-year fixed rate mortgage rate dropped to 6.37% from 6.46% last week, mortgage buyer Freddie Mac said Thursday. One year ago, the rate averaged 6.62%.
This week’s decline in rates follows five straight increases. When mortgage rates rise, they can add hundreds of dollars a month in costs for home shoppers, limiting what they can afford to buy.
The average rate is now back to roughly where it was two weeks ago.

Early Hurricane Outlook Points to
Fewer Storms
| | |
ORLANDO, Fla. — The 2026 Atlantic hurricane season is expected to bring slightly below-average activity, but forecasters warn Florida residents should not let their guard down.
Researchers at Colorado State University predict 13 named storms this year, including six hurricanes and two major hurricanes of Category 3 strength or higher. That compares with a long-term average of about 14 named storms, seven hurricanes and three major hurricanes.
The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 through Nov. 30, with peak activity typically occurring between August and October.
“So far, the 2026 hurricane season is exhibiting characteristics similar to the 2006, 2009, 2015 and 2023 seasons,” said Phil Klotzbach, a senior research scientist in the Department of Atmospheric Science at CSU.

| | Rents Slide Across Florida Markets | | |
WASHINGTON — Average rents in March were down 1.7% compared with March 2025, the largest year-over-year decline since the pandemic created more demand for apartments and drove a historic building boom.
The March decline was slightly greater than the 1.6% year-over-year drop in July 2020, at the height of pandemic chaos and a widespread flight from urban apartments, according to a new report by Apartment List, a company that posts rental listings online.
Eventually, the pandemic and housing shortages pushed up rents, as more people sought space for themselves and their families in suburbs and the Sun Belt, with year-over-year increases peaking at 18% in late 2021 and early 2022.
