Letter from the Headmaster
Dear Great Hearts Monte Vista South Families,
Thank you to all the parents who joined me for Coffee with the Headmaster last week. I thoroughly enjoyed visiting with each of you!
|
I would like to congratulate first grade on fantastic attendance this week! While it is important to keep your child home if they are sick, it is also extremely important to have regular attendance to maintain grade level growth. As we navigate this difficult pandemic environment, please keep both in your minds.
This spring, I am developing a new Academic Advisory Committee, consisting of administration, faculty, and parents. Please email me directly if you are interested in serving on this committee. We will meet 1-2 times this spring to discuss campus plans.
5th grade parents, special tours of the North Campus are now available to help your family as you begin preparing for your students to attend middle school next year. Review the dates and sign up to attend here.
I'm excited to announce a SAVE THE DATE for our first ever Father-Daughter Dance being organized by our Senior Class on Saturday, 2/12. See details below.
As a reminder, Friday, 2/4 is an early release day--Kinder-5th grade students will be released at 1:30pm.
Finally, please join me in supporting our Senior Class as they raise funds for their Senior Trip to DC by purchasing a GHMV pen on Wednesday, 2/2. See all the details below!

On Wednesday, 2/2 GHMV 7th grader Juan Martinez and friends will be selling these GHMV pens to benefit the Senior Class Trip.
Juan's family visited Mexico over Fall Break and, through their family's business, had these GHMV pens made with the idea to sell the pens to our school community and donate all the funds to the Seniors for their Senior Trip. This is the first time we've had a student from another grade level go to such efforts to support our senior class! Thank you, Juan, for your beautiful example of community!
Let's show our support & purchase these GHMV pens for all our favorite Lions!

The Senior Class is pleased to invite Kinder-5th grade families to join them for a special Father Daughter Dance on the evening of Saturday, 2/12. Composer of the Month: January
|
|
Each month our scholars are introduced to a different composer in Music Class. The music of the composer is featured not only in the classroom, but also during lunch-time. During the brief silent time each lunch period, we play the composer of the month's masterpieces. We thought families would enjoy knowing which composer we're studying each month so you may enjoy listening as a family.
This month we are learning about a royal family of musicians. They are Frederick the Great (1712-1786) and his two musical sisters, Princess Wilhelmine (1709-1758) and Princess Anna Amalia (1723-1787). Their father, the Prussian King Frederick I, was considered by some people a music hater and forbade the playing of musical instruments by his children. It seems that Frederick figured out a way to sneak in some musical training because his love of music and philosophy (instead of training to be a warrior like his father) was a constant source of dissension in the family. Frederick I was a hard man and could be abusive at times. But at the end of his life, he made up with his son, and Frederick ascended the throne and ruled well enough to be called Frederick the Great. His passion was the flute, and he was an accomplished player. He composed over 100 pieces for the flute. He also had a hand in composing some operas. He believed opera was a very important part of culture and made admission to operas free so more people could enjoy access to the great music of the time. His eldest sister, Wilhelmine, composed an opera. At the time, there were hardly any women composing music, let alone operas. What is more interesting about her opera is that she composed not only the music but also the libretto, or text of the opera. She is also appreciated for many construction projects that produced more venues for musical expression. About 25 years ago, one of her lost compositions was rediscovered in a library. The students had the pleasure of hearing an excerpt from this Concerto for Harpsichord and Orchestra. Finally, baby sister Amalia received her first official music lesson after Frederick I died. Her first teacher was her big brother Frederick the Great! She composed, performed (she could play the keyboard, flute, and violin very well), and preserved music. She is responsible for collecting over 600 volumes of music by greats such as Bach and Handel and preserving them in a library. Such an act is of great historical value because it helped to ensure that the great music of the past will be available to us and future generations! Thank you, Anna Amalia!

We receive our daily State funding based on the number of students who are in their classrooms at 10:15 am. Therefore, we encourage parents to schedule appointments before or after that time, if possible, so that the student is in their seat during attendance.
For absences, please e-mail Jennifer Russell if your student will be out for the day. When students return, please remember to bring a doctor's note if appropriate. If e-mail is not available, leave a message on the attendance line at 210-888-9485, option 1 for Lower School, then option 0 for the attendance line.
Documentation via phone, e-mail, handwritten note, or doctor's note is required for ALL days a child is absent from school.
Tardies: Students may not sign themselves in to school. If students are dropped off later than 8:05 a.m., parents must park and sign them in.
After school/end-of-day appointments: Early pick-up must occur by 3:15 p.m. on regular school days and 1:00 p.m. on early release days. After that time, students will be dismissed from Barshop as usual.
Thank you for your attention to these important matters!

Parent Service Organization

Battle of Flowers Parade – Friday, April 8
|
|
Hey remember when we were going to do this in April 2020???
GHMV didn’t participate because… well, there was no parade.
It’s happening this year. Stay tuned for more info… we need a ton of help!!
2022 GHMV Spring Carnival – Friday, April 29
|
|
Please mark your calendars for GHMV Spring Carnival on Friday, April 29!
Will we need a ton of help for this event, too? Absolutely. Lots of help is needed. Details coming soon.
PSO, we have not done big, big things in a while. We have a chance to make this a successful event and hope you will consider participating in some way. “Many hands make light work” and a fun time for GHMV families and all this genuinely impacts our kids’ school and teachers in a positive way.
Stocking the Lounge – FEBRUARY – 3rd Grade Families
|
|
PSO stocks the Teachers’ Lounge throughout the year by assigning a Grade Level to a month during the school year. For the entire month of February, 3rd Grade can take care of GHMVS Teachers and Staff by providing coffee, drinks and snacks. Families can help when they can, all month long.
Second Grade Families: you still have some days to do your part this year. To be honest, we’ve only had one grade show up to bring things for the lounge. You don’t have to purchase enough for ALL the faculty and staff… whenever you’re out shopping, just pick up a box of this or that and send it in with your student. If many families do this, the lounge will easily be stocked each month. And thank you!!
Third Grade Families: okay, it’s your turn! In January, we are calling on you to help stock the teachers’ lounge. We need k-cups and snacks. Here are ideas on what to drop off this month...
**K-cups, pretzels, nuts, popcorn, chocolate, granola bars, cookies, kind bars, trail mix, dried fruit, fresh fruit, ramen noodles**
There are two ways to deliver treats to the Lower School:
(1) Drop items off at the front desk anytime during your assigned month or
(2) Purchase items online and have them shipped to
Great Hearts Monte Vista South
211 Belknap Pl.
San Antonio, TX 78212
4th through 5th Grade Families: your turn is coming up! Here is the plan:
March – 4th Grade
April – 5th Grade
Thank you for supporting our teachers this way.
Luncheons and Treats for Lower School Teachers & Staff

|
Information about the next luncheon event will be posted here in the newsletter and in the PSO facebook groups. If you have questions or would like to help with future events, please message Gloria Nwelue.
Lower School Room Reps
|
|
We are finalizing Room Rep assignments but PSO still needs lots of parents to help in this area!
Sections still needing reps: 2B, 3C, 4B, 4C, 5A, 5B, 5C
This is an important role within the PSO because Room Reps help all families feel more connected to our kids’ teachers and the events happening in their classrooms. A greater connection at the grade level supports the overall connection as a school community.
Parents can volunteer in this area even if they are not always available to participate. The responsibilities are very manageable and not as time-consuming as one might think.
2 Parents in each classroom can serve as Room Reps. Examples of Room Rep activities include communicating with parents of your classroom about…
▪ Teacher birthdays
▪ classroom needs
▪ quarter party needs
▪ plans for teacher appreciation
▪ coordinating volunteers for events or service opportunities
The role of a Room Rep sometimes extends beyond the classroom. They may be asked to help coordinate volunteers for their grade level when GHMV PSO hosts larger community events such as Spring Carnival.
For more information, please reach out to the PSO Room Rep Coordinator Marcy Ringer.
Volunteering at GHMV South
|
|
The GHMV Parent Service Organization focuses primarily on events and activities that align with our goal of service to this school. PSO offers different volunteer opportunities so all Parents have a chance to be involved at some point during the year.
To volunteer on campus, be sure you
— complete volunteer training (this covers confidentiality, FERPA, sharing space with temple, etc.)
If you would like to help with events for the 2021-22 school year, please add your email to the PSO Parent Volunteer List here: https://ghmvpso.org/volunteer
EVERY DAY
Parents can help monitor the lunchroom every day. It's a great way to support our childrens' Teachers. This gives them a moment to have their own lunch and a quick recharge for the second part of the day.
Help on a regular basis, or help on the days that you can. It's so appreciated! Sign up here:
