Dear Mater Dei Parents/Guardians,
I hope this message finds you safe and healthy.
It is amazing that we have already completed the first quarter. You should have received your child’s progress report already. After reviewing the data from the quarter, I must congratulate our students and teachers on their hard work and perseverance despite all of the challenges associated with this pandemic. Students are excelling in both hybrid and distance learning formats. Congratulations and keep up the hard work.
We adjusted our school schedule and look forward to implementing it on campus beginning on Thursday of this week. We will be staggering the dismissal times by grade to keep students better distanced at dismissal. If you are picking up a Junior, Senior or have students in multiple grades, we ask that you wait in the Parish parking lot, as we will not open the pickup line until 12:50. This will allow us to get all student drivers off campus when dismissed
at 12:40. Freshmen and Sophomore will be released at 12:50 when the pick-up line will be opened. (See details below.) I am also attaching an FAQ to address some of the questions that were posed through our most recent Parent Survey.

Although the pandemic has forced many aspects of our lives to “go virtual,” we are planning to slowly bring back some aspects of the Mater Dei experience. We will continue to approach everything slowly to ensure that we do not jeopardize the health or safety of our community.
We appreciate you continuing to spread the good news about Mater Dei Catholic. Thank you for helping us to invite families outside of Mater Dei Catholic to attend our Virtual Open House on October 29th at 6:00-7:00pm.
Thank you for continuing to partner with us for your child’s education as we navigate through this pandemic together.
God Bless,
FRANK V. STINGO®
Principal

COVID-19 Symptoms
If anyone in your household is experiencing COVID-19 symptoms and you have any questions about sending your student to campus, please contact our Nurse Lisa McDonald at lmcdonald@mdchs.net.
Staggered Dismissal
We will be staggering the dismissal times to keep students better distanced at dismissal. If you are picking up a Junior or Senior, or have students in multiple grades, we recommend arranging to meet your students in the Parish parking lot. Here is what staggered dismissal will look like starting on Thursday:
12:40 Dismiss all Juniors and Seniors, and drivers and their siblings
(pick up line is closed)
12:50 Dismiss all Freshmen and Sophomore (pick-up line is open, however parents may opt to arrange pick up in the Parish parking lot).

This week is National Chemistry Week
This year's theme for National Chemistry Week is "Sticking with Chemistry." #NationalChemistryWeek acts to spread the importance of chemistry to everyone's quality of life.
Ashely Morris, one of our chemistry teachers encapsulates her love for the subject, "As a student, I was always interested in science and was lucky to have teachers and mentors who allowed me to learn and grow in the field. Chemistry has so many real-world applications—the evidence of chemistry is essentially all around us. To see students making those connections based on what they're learning and to witness them having 'ah-ha!' moments of their own is especially gratifying."
At Mater Dei we offer three different chemistry classes for students to explore. David Shadowski '21, says, "Chem involves a lot of hands on learning." Karla Saldana '22 adds, "Chemistry requires a lot of analyzing and understanding what it is exactly being asked rather than just memorizing."
As for chemistry in a hybrid classroom? Victoria Bustria, '23 thinks that being "hands on" is about "doing and putting what we learn into action even in our virtual labs."
Students appreciate the hands-on learning about the world around them, and many, like Melina Vicente '22 also look to their futures, "I think what we're learning will help me out in the future since I want to go into the medical field."
Hands on learning? Career readiness? Is there anything else we could possibly love about chemistry? We leave you with this quote from Ms. Morris, "Some might think chemistry is boring or too clinical, but chemists actually need imagination and curiosity to problem-solve and approach questions only science can answer."
So this week, embrace your creativity and delve a bit into chemistry in the world around you.

October: The Month of the Holy Rosary
October is the month of the Holy Rosary. The Bible on beads, as it's known, is a meditation on the Gospel that brings Christ into our daily lives. Faculty received Rosaries blessed by Fr. Paul at the start of the month. As Mrs. Salazar says, the Rosary is a heavenly instrument that helps people get through any challenging time. The Holy Rosary is a spiritual weapon that brings comfort.

How to Fill Out the CSS Profile
The CSS Profile, short for the College Scholarship Service Profile, is an online application created and maintained by the United States-based College Board that allows college students to apply for non-federal financial aid.
The CSS Profile helps colleges to determine your financial need and award you with a financial aid package that can make college both affordable and accessible. The CSS Profile asks for much of the same information as the FAFSA, including tax returns, W-2 forms, bank statements, and other records of income. However, not all universities ask for the CSS Profile.
To begin, go to cssprofile.org. You fill find the following under “Getting Started”:

October is Compassion month for our High School students. Advisory has been centering on compassion. Today's gospel was the story of The Good Samaritan and Father Paul challenged the students to be capable of more than they even thought they were as they show compassion. In Advisory this month, students will be learning about Father Greg Boyle's ministry (the world's largest gang intervention and rehabilitation program in the world) and hearing and discussing his TED talk Compassion and Kinship. This is in preparation for his virtual visit on October 26 in which he will speak with Mater Dei students and take their questions. We are privileged to have such a holy and renown speaker. Father Boyle is a member of the California Hall of Fame, winner of the humanitarian of the year award from various publications, and a recipient of Notre Dame University’s Laetare medal for Catholic service.

Nicole Rogers, Class of 2001, shares her experience as a Crusader:
"To me, being a Crusader means I am always a part of a school community regardless of how long I have been away. Every time I step onto campus, I feel welcomed and know that the heart of Marian High School still lives on. Attending Catholic school my whole life was very special to me and it led me to my career now as a Catholic School Elementary teacher at Saint Katharine Drexel Academy. Knowing that I get to teach my students about the love of learning and also about the love of God is truly a blessing."
