NY County Medical Society attends MSSNY Lobby Day, Advocating for Key Healthcare Issues

Albany, NY –The New York County Medical Society (NYCMS) and the Medical Society of the State of New York (MSSNY) held a successful Lobby Day, bringing a strong physician presence to Albany to advocate for critical state healthcare issues.

NYCMS members met with legislators to discuss issues including reducing prior authorization barriers, maintaining physician oversight in scope of practice, protecting quality care in the Workers’ Compensation system, and addressing concerns about proposals to shift Excess Layer Malpractice insurance costs to physicians and to eliminate physician appeals for Medicaid Managed Care payment disputes.

"We sincerely thank the legislators who took the time to meet with us and hear directly from physicians," said Jessica J. Krant, MD, MPH, President of the New York County Medical Society. "Such a strong turnout from our members shows how important these issues are for all. Advocacy is essential, and we are proud to stand together with MSSNY to protect New York state physicians and our patients."

NYCMS and MSSNY look forward to continuing their advocacy efforts and encourage all physicians to get involved.

The NY County Medical Society and the Clifford L. Spingarn, MD Memorial Education Fund recently hosted a CME webinar, Healthy Homes, Healthy Families – What Clinicians Need to Know. This CME offers critical insights into how environmental health issues in the home can impact patient care.

The program was introduced by Steven Mandel, MD, Clinical Professor of Neurology at Hofstra/Northwell, who provided valuable insights into the broader implications of environmental factors on neurological health. Jill Baron, MD, a solo practitioner in Integrative and Functional Medicine in New York City and Clinical Assistant Professor at Stony Brook University, moderated our panel.

The expert panel featured Sarah Evans, PhD, MPH, Assistant Professor at the Children’s Environmental Health Center, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, Maida P. Galvez, MD, MPH, Professor of Pediatrics at Icahn School of Medicine and Rebecca Ofrane, DrPH, Assistant Professor at Montclair State University. They shared their expertise on counseling patients about risks from environmental toxins in their homes, including household cleaning products, pesticides, mold, mildew, and air quality issues. The discussion also covered how clinicians can screen for, diagnose, and treat illnesses linked to environmental factors.

NYCMS aims to provide physicians with the knowledge and tools necessary to enhance patient care and stay informed on emerging healthcare issues.
