News from The Episcopal Cafe

From the Rector

Dear Parishioners and Friends of St. Mary's,

On Sunday November 3 rd we will celebrate the Feast of All Saints . We will be celebrating and remembering all the Saints of the Church, including our loved ones, neighbors and friends who have entered into eternal life. You will find colored prayer flags at the back of the church to write the names of those who you would like remembered. You may also give us pictures of loved ones and friends who have died. We will hang the flags and photos in the church throughout the month of November. Following the 8:00 and 10:00 a.m. services we will go out to the churchyard to read all of the names of those buried in this sacred space. At our 10:00 a.m. services the choir will be singing special music for this occasion, and we will have a bagpiper who will lead us outside to the churchyard. After the service all are welcome to join us for a festive coffee hour in the Great Hall.   This service is an important tradition here at St. Mary's and it is a major feast day in the life of the Church.

As many of you know we are now in the midst of our 2020 Pledge Campaign . I invite you to join me and prayerfully consider making a pledge to St. Mary's for the coming year.   If you did not receive a pledge card you may request one from the office, or you may pick up an extra card and envelope at the back of the church. We are asking that pledges be returned by Sunday November 24, when we will celebrate Thanksgiving with one 9:00 a.m. service, followed by a Potluck Brunch in the Great Hall. The potluck sign up sheet can be found in the great hall. Please join us as we give thanks for this community of faith and all the blessings of this life.

This Sunday The Rev. Judith Doran will be the celebrant and preacher at both the 8:00 and 10:00 a.m. services. Judith is the former Associate Rector of Church of the Holy Spirit in Lake Forest, and she has done a great deal of supply and interim work. She is looking forward to being with you. Steve Szalaj is our guest pianist at the 10:00 a.m. service. Many of you know that  Steve is the Artistic Director of Voices of Harmony Community Choir. I am so grateful for his willingness to be with us.

I will be away this Sunday attending the last service of the Rev. Bonnie Perry at All Saints in Chicago. Many of you know that Bonnie was my priest and that she is a dear friend and mentor to me. Bonnie will be leaving All Saints after 27 years and beginning her new call as the Bishop of the Diocese of Michigan on November 1. Some of you will remember Bonnie as the preacher at my installation here at St. Mary's. Bonnie's dynamic leadership is a much needed blessing for the entire church.

Blessings,
Fran+

Stewardship Message from Our Co-Warden

My friends at St. Mary's,

First let me say that finding this parish has been a blessing for me and my wife Sophie. It has been three years since we found our home in Christ and we have grown very close to many of our brothers and sisters through the worship of God, attending bible study, assisting with the community meal program, altar guild, and other duties which include my position as Co-Warden.

Giving of my time is just a small part of what I feel I owe to my church community and God. I recognize that God has blessed me with treasures which I can never fully repay. I also realize I must properly manage that bounty by giving back an appropriate portion for the benefit and success of his church and kingdom.

During this Stewardship Campaign, I ask that you not only continue to support the various ministries at St. Mary's but also pledge your financial support throughout the next year. Completing your pledge card on time and submitting to the church office allows us to plan for the new 2020 budget and for that, I thank you in advance.

Yours in Christ,
Steve Brooks

Rest in Peace, Bishop Montgomery

We received word this morning from the Diocese, that Bishop   James Montgomery, the ninth Bishop of Chicago, died yesterday afternoon following a short illness.   Service information, and a letter from Bishop Jeffrey Lee can be read here .

ReVive Center for Housing and Healing Christmas Basket Program

St. Mary's is once again participating in the ReVive Center's Christmas Basket Program. This is a wonderful opportunity for members of our Parish to purchase Jewel gift cards or shop for individual Christmas gifts for some of the most impoverished families of our metropolitan area. This year we have been asked to sponsor 8 families; a total of 28 individuals.

Sign-up begins this Sunday, October 27 in the Great Hall. More detailed information will be available at the display located in the Great Hall.

Please contact me if you have any questions.   Thank you to everyone for continuing to make this fun outreach ministry so meaningful and successful!

Cate Becker,
2019 Christmas Basket Ministry Coordinator

Kick-Start Capital Campaign

Our Kick Start Capital Campaign is underway. The first stage is one of discernment, and we need to hear from all of you regarding what programs and/or projects you would like to see at St. Mary's, if we had the funds. We have already held a few cottage meetings, which provide the place for you to gather with others in the parish and share your ideas. There are still more meeting opportunities available. Please see the sign up sheets in the back of church, or contact Amy in the office and let her know which meeting you would like to attend.   We have openings in the following meetings:

TONIGHT, October 24, 7:00 p..m. at the home of Mike and Sue Dethorne
Sunday, November 3 at 1:00 p.m. - the Horeled home
Sunday, November 10 at 11:30 a.m. - Church School wing

Thank you to all those who have already signed up to participate in this important Parish work.
