The next CRYSTAL LAKE FOOD PANTRY volunteer opportunity is Wednesday, October 10. Contact Aimee Day if you can help.  Shift times are 8:30-11:30 am, and 11:30 am - 2:30 pm.
 
CENTERING PRAYER meets the first and third Tuesday of every month, at 7:30 p.m. in the Great Hall.

TAIZE is an ecumenical, meditative common prayer, incorporating song, chant, scripture readings, and silence.  People of ALL faith traditions are welcome this monthly candlelight service.  The services are held on the 4th Tuesday of the month at the First Congregational Church of Crystal Lake, 461 Pierson St.  The next Taize service will be held on Tuesday, September 25, at 7:00 p.m.

A FREE COMMUNITY MEAL  is offered at St. Mary's on the third Saturday of every month.  The meal is served from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., and ALL are welcome.  There is no RSVP required.   Free will donations will be accepted.  Please watch the newsletter and website for the menu, which will be published a week or two before the event.  The next  Community Meal is Saturday, September 15.

From the Rector

Dear Friends and Parishioners of St. Mary's,

This Saturday evening from 5:00-7:00 p.m., we will hold our next community meal. Plan to stop in with family and friends and join us for a delicious dinner and wonderful hospitality. All are welcome. A free will offering will be taken.

This fall I invite you to participate in our "One Congregation, One Book Discussion". On  Sunday, October 28 , following our 10:00 a.m. service, we will be discussing Crazy Christians, A Call to Follow Jesus , written by our Presiding Bishop, The Rt. Rev. Michael B. Curry.   If you are interested in participating, please sign up in the parish hall. If you would like us to order a book for you, please let us know by September 30. You may also get a Kindle edition or purchase a copy on your own at Amazon.com. See further details in this newsletter.

Please see information in this newsletter about participating in the CROP Hunger Walk  on Sunday September 30 . This year there are a variety of ways to participate, including helping to host the fun/rest stop here at St. Mary's from 1:00-3:00 p.m.

Mark your calendars now for the Bishop's visit on  Sunday,  October 7 th . Jeff Lee will celebrate and preach at both our 8:00 and 10:00 a.m. services. At the 10:00 a.m. service he will be doing confirmations and receptions for 17 youth and adults who have been attending classes and preparing over the summer. Jeff is a wonderful preacher and this is a great opportunity to hear and meet our Bishop. A festive coffee hour will be held following the 10:00 a.m. service.

September Community Meal

You're invited to join us on Saturday, September 15 5:00-7:00 p.m. for our next free , monthly Community Meal Remember, this meal is open to anyone, and no RSVP is required. Bring your family and friends! There is no charge for the meal, but free-will donations are appreciated. "One Congregation, One Book" Discussion

On Sunday, October 28 , following our 10:00 a.m. service, we will be discussing Crazy Christians, A Call to Follow Jesus , written by our Presiding Bishop, The Rt. Rev, Michael B. Curry.   Interested? Please sign up in the Great Hall.    If you would like us to order a paperback copy of the book for you, the price is $15, payable to St. Mary's. (Order deadline is September 30 .)

If you would like to order the book on your own, or purchase the Kindle edition, it is available on Amazon for $16.08 (paperback) or $10.79 (Kindle).  (prices as of 9/13).
 
Confirmation / Adult Inquirers Class Schedule

In preparation for Bishop Lee's visit on October 7, Confirmation Classes and Adult Inquirer's Classes are now underway.   As a reminder to those attending the classes, below are the remaining class dates:

Youth Confirmation

Service project at the Crystal Lake Food Pantry.  Parents are asked to drop off/pick up their child at the food pantry, 42 East St., Crystal Lake.  
September 23, 11:40 am to 1:15 pm, final class at the church

Adult Inquirers
Monday, September 24,  7:00-8:30 p.m.

Historic Organ Concert
Sunday, September 23   ~   6:00 p.m.

In case you missed the concert in August, here is another opportunity!! The Episcopal Church of the Holy Communion in Lake Geneva, will be holding a concert to benefit their historic 1883 Pipe Organ - Opus 1144. The concert will be performed by Mark Brampton Smith, and will include works by Sweelinck, Bach, Mendelssohn, John Knowles Paine, and many others.

Advance Tickets OR Free Will Offering Options:
Advanced tickets may be purchased by mail (send payment and self-addressed stamped envelope to the church) or reserved by phone. $25 advanced tickets include a dinner voucher for the same day to Tuscan Tavern and Grill.

You may also attend without the advanced ticket dinner option; a free will offering will be taken the night of the concert.

Flea Market Opportunity

St. Paul's Episcopal Church in McHenry is looking for vendors to participate in their flea market on Saturday, September 29 , from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.   If you have any items you'd like to sell, new or used, this is a great opportunity.   The fee is $20 for a 10'x10' indoor space, or 20'x20' outdoor space.  You are responsible for your own set-up, take-down, tables, canopies, chairs, etc. Registration forms are available on the back table or they may be downloaded here.  Fees are to be paid in advance.
 
German-American Fest

If you love everything German, the First Congregational Church in Crystal Lake will be hosting a German-American Friendship Fest on Saturday, October 6 , from 10:00 am to 12:30 pm.   This is an all-ages event, benefiting Prairie Ridge High School German-American Partnership Program Exchange families.

Advance tickets can be purchased online ($10 children; $7.50 adult meal) or at the door ($11.50 children; $9 adult meal). In addition to an authentic German meal, the children's ticket also includes a craft to take home, prizes, and a German language lesson.

St. Mary's Blue Jean Sunday

We NEED all of you to join the parish in a Fall Yard Clean-Up on Sunday, October 14 immediately following the 10:00 a.m. service. We plan to work for 2 hours and then all will join in a rewarding lunch ! There are many bushes to trim and weeds to pull, so don't worry if you think you don't know weeds from trees. You will have guidance.

Take pride in your church so it presents a loved & cared for appearance. Many hands make light work. Thank you!!
