News from The Episcopal Cafe

From the Rector

Dear Parishioners and Friends of St. Mary's,

Last Saturday we once again had a wonderful community meal , thanks to Chef Tom and all of the wonderful volunteers who helped make this happen. We served 75 meals and completely covered our costs once again with all of the monetary donations. We continue to have people in the community who need this meal, and we have many new people attending every month. Again I thank our dedicated team of volunteers for giving of their time and talent to make this ministry happen each month.

Please mark your calendars for the following important dates which are coming up in June.
 - On June 1st  at 10:30 a.m., we will hold the interment of Linda Robert in The Churchyard. Linda is the late wife of Cameron Robert, and your presence would be appreciated.
 - June 2 nd  is Blue Jean Sunday - we will work in the garden after the 10:00 a.m. service and have lunch at 1:00 p.m. Please sign up in the parish hall.
 - June 9 th is the Feast of Pentecost . We will renew our baptismal vows at both the 8:00 and 10:00 a.m. services. We will celebrate the birthday of the church and have a festive coffee hour following the 10:00 a.m. service.   Please wear red for the occasion!
  - June 22 nd  at 11:30 a.m., is the St. Mary's Senior Lunch in the Great Hall. Come and kick off the first weekend of summer with an old fashioned picnic .

As we approach Memorial Day weekend, please take the time to pray for and remember all of the men and women of the armed forces who paid the ultimate price in service to our country. This year we remember in particular the approximately 4,300 allied soldiers who died on D-Day, the 6 th of June. This year marks the 75 th anniversary of D-Day.

This Sunday the Rev. Jane Clark will be here as our supply priest, celebrating and preaching at both our 8:00 and 10:00 a.m. services. Jane was the former Rector of St. Andrews in Grayslake for eleven years and is a supply priest in the Diocese of Chicago. Jane has been with us before and is looking forward to seeing everyone. I will be off Sunday attending a family event. Please welcome her.

Have a happy, safe and blessed holiday weekend.

                 We Remember
We remember the many brave men and women who have given their lives through the history of our country to protect us from danger and harm. We remember all those who sustained injury in mind and/or body in the course of their service. We salute all those who served in the military.

St. Mary's Blue Jean Sunday
Parish Clean-Up Day with Lunch

Sunday, June 2 following the 10:00 a.m. Service!
Your Help is Needed!

On Sunday, June 2  from  11:15 a.m. to 1:00 p.m . we will hold a parish clean-up day of our grounds. We need people to weed and pick up branches, and do a basic clean-up of our 5 acres.  Lunch will be served in the Great Hall as soon as we finish up.  Please wear your yard work clothes to church and spend sometime helping, as "many hands make light work."  Please RSVP for lunch with Amy in the office or sign up in the Great Hall.  We want to make sure we have enough food on hand for all. Volunteers of all ages are welcome! There will be something to do for any age. For questions or more information, contact  Tracy Higgins.

THE FEAST OF PENTECOST

Sunday, June 9 , is the Feast of Pentecost, which marks the coming of the Holy Spirit and the Birthday of the church in the world.  In celebration of the day,  everyone is encouraged to wear red.
There will be a renewal of our Baptismal vows at the 8:00 a.m. service, and we will celebrate the baptism of Alessandra Enriqueta Rivera at the 10:00 a.m. service.

Do you speak or read another language in addition to English?   Then we could use your help at the 10:00 a.m. Pentecost service! As you may or may not know, we have a wonderful Pentecost tradition here at St. Mary's. The Pentecost reading of the Acts of the Apostles 2:1-21 is read in several different languages simultaneously, to illustrate the scripture passage: "All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability." (Acts 2:4)

In the past we've had speakers in Spanish, French, Italian, Latin, German, Greek, and even Russian! Any language is welcome!!!!   If you are interested, please contact Amy in the office. She will get you a copy of the reading in your preferred language, or you may use your own foreign-language Bible if you have one.

On Saturday June 22 at 11:30 a.m ., St. Mary's Seniors and their friends are invited to an Old Fashioned Picnic (indoors of course), to kick off the first weekend of Summer. Lunch will be served in the Great Hall followed by door prizes, and Bingo games with prizes. Gather at 11:30 a.m. for refreshments. Lunch will be served at 12:00 Noon. The menu is Deviled Eggs, Fried Chicken, Coleslaw, Potato Salad, Watermelon, Pie a la mode for dessert, Summer Sangria, Lemonade and Ice Tea.
