News from The Episcopal Cafe

From the Rector

Dear Parishioners and Friends of St. Mary's,

Sunday September 15 , after the 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. services, Joe Merlino, our consultant from The Episcopal Church Foundation, will be with us to discuss the Kick Start Capital Campaign Process with you. He will lead us through an understanding of the three phases of the process: discernment, feasibility, and the solicitation of funds for parish projects. The first phase is one in which you will be invited to a house or cottage small group meeting to brainstorm, dream, and share your hopes for projects here at St. Mary's. This is an opportunity for you to give your input. It is important that you understand the process that we are undertaking as a parish, and Sunday September 15 is a time for you to learn about the process as well as ask questions that you may have. Please plan to be with us!

CROP Walk is Sunday September 29  at 2:00 p.m., which is right around the corner.   There are several ways to be involved which will help the St. Mary's team. You may go online right now and make a donation to help us reach our goal of $1,500. You may sign up to walk with our team, or you may help staff our rest stop here at St. Mary's from 2:00- 4:00 p.m. Our church is a rest stop on both the one-mile and four-mile route. We will have some snacks, games, and water, and have our rest rooms available to all the walk participants. If you are interested in the ministry of hospitality on the day of the walk please let me know. This is the fifth anniversary of CROP Walk and the efforts of Church World Services to eradicate hunger in our communities. Please see more information in this news letter to support the cause.

I hope that you have a safe and blessed holiday weekend.

See you Sunday

Memorial Service

Long-time parishioners may remember Kevin Addy , who was a member of St. Mary's from 1977-1985. Kevin passed away on August 22, and his memorial service will be held here tomorrow, Friday, August 30, at 11:00 am. Rev. Fran will preside at the service.

Episcopal Church Foundation Consultant
to be with us  on Sunday September 15
after the 8:00 & 10:00 a.m. services,
to discuss the Kick-Start Capital Campaign Process.

I am excited to announce that with vestry approval, the Parish of St. Mary's is engaging in a Kick-Start Capital Campaign Process with the Diocese of Chicago, and the Episcopal Church Foundation (ECF). The ECF Campaign Method has three phases. The first is one of Discernment , in which we as a congregation answer the questions "What is God calling us to do?", and "Who are we called to be?" This is an opportunity to gather ideas from each member of the congregation in house or cottage small-group meetings, regarding what projects and ministries you believe we should be engage in, if we had the funds.

The second phase is Feasibility , in which we determine, "Is a capital campaign feasible for our parish?"   Is our congregation willing to support our mission, ministry and areas of financial need?"

The third phase of the campaign is one called Solicitation , in which we ask what will people commit to financially. "Will you commit to a capital campaign to complete the projects and raise funds for the ministry we as a congregation have chosen?" It is only after completing all three phases that we would decide if we will engage in a capital campaign and raise the money for our goals.

We have a consultant from the Episcopal Church Foundation, and he will be with us to explain the entire process on Sunday September 15, after the 8:00 and 10:00 a.m. coffee hours. Please make it a point to be here, as this is your opportunity to learn about this process. Our consultant, Joe Merlino, who is working with several congregations in the Diocese of Chicago, will be here to present the program and to answer all of your questions. This is a parish wide process and your input is needed. I think you will find this a very engaging and helpful way for us to address some of goals, projects, and hopes for St. Mary's.
