News from The Episcopal Cafe

From the Rector

Dear Parishioners and Friends of St. Mary's,

This Sunday please join us for our annual Thanksgiving service at 9:00 a.m. The choir will be leading us in singing some of our favorite thanksgiving hymns and following the service, everyone is welcome to join us for a potluck brunch in the Great Hall. Please bring a dish to share if you wish. Please note that we will only have one service at 9:00 a.m. this Sunday.

I hope you will join us as we gather to give thanks for all the blessings of this life and for all the blessings of our parish. We are also asking that you return your pledge card for 2020 this Sunday so that we can really begin to work on our budget for the coming year. Our goal is 100% participation as all pledges do matter and they all make a difference. Pledges are the main source of income that we rely on to continue our ministries and cover our operating expenses. Many of you have already turned in a pledge for 2020 and I thank you for your generosity. If you need a pledge card you may pick one up at the back of the church or ask for one in the church office.

This week St. Mary's received a wonderful blessing. When you arrive at church on Sunday you will notice that a grand piano is now on our altar next to the organ. The grand piano is a gift from Gail Head and I am so very grateful for this lovely instrument that will enhance our music program here at St. Mary's for years to come. Some of you know that Sandy and Gail had two pianos in their home and Gail has gifted one of them to our parish. The piano not only sounds lovely and looks lovely, but it is a wonderful gift that reminds us of the wonderful gift of music that Sandy gave to this parish for twenty-five years. Thank you Gail Head, this is such a blessing for the entire parish. The grand piano will be blessed and dedicated at our Service of Advent Lessons and Carols on Sunday December 8 th .

This week our Annual Diocesan Convention is being held at the Westin in Lombard IL on Friday and Saturday. I will be attending the convention with our convention delegates and alternates as well as other members of the parish. St. Mary's will actually be represented well at convention with eleven members attending.  We will be attending workshops, and voting on resolutions as well as participating in a diocesan wide worship service.

It is Jeff Lee's final convention with us as our Diocesan Bishop. Jeff is retiring in August of 2020. The new bishop will be elected at a special electing convention to be held at St. James Cathedral on Saturday June 20, 2020. In the spring the search committee will announce a slate of names of those running for Bishop, and we will have an opportunity to attend question and answer sessions to hear each one of the candidates. As soon as the slate for our election is made public you will be informed.

See you all on Sunday,
Update on Deacon Postulant,
Mike Choquette

As many of you know, Mike Choquette is a postulant for Holy Orders to the deaconate and St. Mary's is his sponsoring parish. Mike and his wife Terry have been away since last January while Mike has been completing his field education at St. Lawrence in Libertyville. Mike is expected to become a candidate for ordination and be ordained to the deaconate sometime in the late spring or early summer, before Bishop Jeff Lee retires. Mike will return to St. Mary's after his ordination, subject to the Bishop's approval.

It is true that the Bishop can always appoint a deacon to another ministry based on the needs of the diocese, but we do expect that Mike will return to St. Mary's following his ordination, at least for a time. Traditionally deacons in our diocese have remained at the churches that have raised them up, but this is truly up to the bishop. It is also true that a new bishop can make changes as to how and where deacons serve, but I am confident that the Holy Spirit will provide for us and for Mike as life continues to change in our diocese, and as my grandmother used to say "we'll cross that bridge if and when we come to it." I will keep you informed as Mike's process continues and I ask that you continue to keep Mike in your prayers. Mike will make a wonderful deacon for St. Mary's and the wider church!

ReVive Center for Housing and Healing Christmas Basket Program

There is only one week left to sponsor a needy individual for the ReVive Center's Christmas Basket Program. This is a wonderful opportunity for members of our Parish to purchase Jewel gift cards or shop for individual Christmas gifts for some of the most impoverished families of our metropolitan area. See the display in the Great Hall to sign up!   We still have several individuals who have not been sponsored!!

Please wrap and label gifts (new) and put them in a cardboard box for transport to the ReVive Center.  Label the box with the family code number. Please leave the box unsealed , so that we can add gift cards to it.

Please bring gift cards to the office and gift items to the Nursery by 11:00 a.m. Sunday, December 1.
Please contact me if you have any questions.   Thank you to everyone for continuing to make this fun outreach ministry so meaningful and successful!

2019 Christmas Basket Ministry Coordinator

Diaper and Wipe Drive

My name is Michael Mauger and I am doing my Eagle Project for Boy Scouts.  For my project I have chosen to run a diaper and wipe drive to benefit the Northern Illinois Diaper Bank.  Please consider bringing diapers and wipes to St. Mary's during the month of November to help me meet my goal of 500 packages.   I chose this organization because they have helped my family with diapers, since my brother uses so many for his gastroparesis. There will be a collection bin at church.  Thank you!
Creating Sacred Space in Advent
A Labyrinth Walk

Saturday, December 14
9:30 a.m. to Noon
St. Mary's Great Hall
For this walk, we will gather on the second Saturday of December, pausing in our outward preparations to share time creating sacred space. No previous experience is needed.

Walking together on the labyrinth pattern creates a symbolic outward journey that tunes us in to our inward journey. The path for both our outward and inward journey toward the coming of Jesus, will be framed by story, music and sacred scripture.

You are invited. Come on December 14th to walk and to listen, and to share the gifts our loving God has prepared for us this Advent season.
