100th ANNIVERSARY OF MEMORIAL BOULEVARD - COUNT DOWN

“The Dedication of the World War I Monument”
This coming October, BPRYCS, the City of Bristol, and the Bristol Historical Society along with the Bristol Veterans Council, Memorial Military Museum and the extended community plan to celebrate the one hundredth anniversary of the Memorial Boulevard which opened in 1921. This is the third article in a monthly series written by Tom Dickau commemorating the centennial anniversary of the park by depicting the history behind the land, people, and events that helped shape it into the park Bristol treasures today.

November 11, 1921, exactly three years from the end of the Great War or The War to End All Wars, was especially significant both within our community and nationally. At an 11:00am ceremony, the Memorial Boulevard, was officially dedicated not only to those who returned home but also to those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.
Simultaneously, festivities were being assembled at the Arlington National Cemetery for the noon-hour dedication by President Warren G. Harding of The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The body of the unidentified soldier, who died in a French battle, was returned to the United States to be the first interred at the Virginia cemetery. This memorial would recognize and honor unknown soldiers who served and died during future wars.
The Friday morning dedication of the Memorial Boulevard was held at the intersection of Mellen Street and the boulevard. Less than three years later, this would become the site of the dedication of the War Memorial. A five-division parade was held prior to the ceremonies. Reverend Ernest L. Wismer of the First Congregational Church of Bristol read the eulogy, while Mayor Joseph F. Dutton officially dedicated the Memorial Boulevard. Councilman John Donnelly brought greetings of the city to the assembled spectators.
