GOVERNOR YOUNGKIN:
CELEBRATING GRADUATIONS, LEOs AND AAPI MONTH
It was a week of celebrating the achievements of our young adults as they graduated from colleges and universities across the Commonwealth. The Governor gave commencement speeches on Tuesday at the Virginia Military Institute (HERE) and Thursday at George Mason University. A few students protested, but the GMU College Republicans Chairman and the Governor had the correct response HERE. Congratulations to all the graduates!
Cutting ribbons and making new friends! The Governor and First Lady Suzanne Youngkin opened a new playground as part of his Partnership for Petersburg program. And here in NoVA, the Governor cut the ribbon at the new American Legion Post 139 in Arlington with the Gold-Standard Digital Hub, which will improve connectivity and access to resources and benefits for veterans.
"NOW, THEREFORE, I, Glenn Youngkin, do hereby recognize May 14-20, 2023, as VIRGINIA POLICE WEEK, and May 15, 2023, as PEACE OFFICERS MEMORIAL DAY in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call these observances to the attention of our citizens."
  • Signed: Glenn Youngkin / Governor
  • Signed: Kay Cole James / Secretary of the Commonwealth
The Governor, First Lady and his Cabinet gathered at the Commonwealth Public Safety Memorial to remember and honor those law enforcement heroes that ran towards danger and paid the ultimate sacrifice. "May God bless and protect all Virginia’s law enforcement officers and their families."
Party in the Executive Mansion Celebrating Asian American and Pacific Islander Month in Virginia. The Gov and First Lady hosted this 파티 (Korean for party) on Friday evening. Lots of Northern Virginia Republicans "in the house"!
BUILDING UP MOMENTUM WITH OUR
LOCAL GOP CANDIDATES
(Early voting has begun for the June Primary on June 20)
The Governor has released another batch of endorsements including some in Republican primaries. He has endorsed Bill Woolf in the 30th State Senate District and John Stirrup in the 21st District House of Delegates primary. Read about the endorsements HERE.
On land and on the water, Prince William County Supervisor Jeanine Lawson is meeting and greeting voters as she campaigns to become the next Chair of PWC's Board of Supervisors (website HERE).

Beautiful weather Saturday for the Nokesville Day Parade, and then out on the Potomac with candidate Karla Justice (Occoquan District Supervisor) (website HERE) for The Blessing of the Fleet. As Jeanine said, "Occoquan is a beautiful part of PWC and I am thrilled to support Karla in her race for Supervisor!"
Opening your home for neighborhood "Meet-and- Greets" is a great way to help your local GOP candidate. James Thomas, who is running for the House of Delegates in the 10th District against Dan Helmer (new website HERE) was hosted this past week in a Fairfax Station neighborhood. (photo above)
we need you
Volunteers Needed!!
Whether it's your local Republican Committee's table at the Farmers Market or at community events (Viva Vienna this weekend Fairfax GOP and the Falls Church Memorial Day Parade) or if it's your local candidate door-knocking and making phone calls, we need you! Please, please go to your GOP Committee's website (listed at the end of the newsletter) and your local candidate's website (listed on the SUVGOP website HERE) and volunteer to help. We cannot wait until the fall to save Virginia!!

"AROUND THE STATE" GOP NEWS
  • WILL HE OR WON'T HE? - NEW GGY VIDEO
  • WINNING IN McLEAN
  • DEMS IMAGES AND POLICIES - JUST SAY NO
  • VFRW GO TO THE MOUNTAINS
Spirit of Virginia (the Governor's Political Action Committee) released a new video this week (click above or HERE) of GGY's speech at the Ronald Reagan Library. As Fox News and others stated, this looks a lot like something a presidential candidate would release. Speculation continues to swirl around a potential "74 to 47 in 24" campaign (74th Virginia Governor to 47th President in 2024). We will see!!
McLean Day this past Saturday was an opportunity for Fairfax GOP candidates (HERE) to reach out to lots of voters at the FCRC Booth. Huge congratulations to Gloria Marrero Chambers, Katie Gorka and Kathleen Cooney Porter for winning their elections to the McLean Community Center Governing Board!!!
An old proverb "clothes maketh the man" seems to fit the Democrat US Senator from Pennsylvania. Democrats continue to present poor examples for our children with the images and policies they push, plus mocking (HERE) parents for their concerns. The "Parents Matter" movement that started in Loudoun and Fairfax grows across the Nation!!
Busy weekend for the Virginia Federation of Republican Women (VFRW) as they held their annual convention in beautiful Harrisonburg. Kicking it off with a mountain-view reception at the home of State Sen. Mark Obenshain; listened to speeches by Congresswoman Jen Kiggans and Lt. Governor Winsome Earle-Sears and finished off with Executive Committee meetings.

ENVIRONMENTAL ALERT: INDUSTRIAL SOLAR
IMPACTING VIRGINIA'S FORESTS
Click Above or HERE To See Inudstrial Solar Damage
Virginia law, driven largely by the VCEA, needs to be changed to avoid unintended but significant environmental impacts from utility scale industrial solar projects.

Did You Know?
  • Virginia’s acreage in solar is growing at a 77% annual rate, may occupy 700,000 acres by 2025
  • 69% of Virginia solar facilities regulated by DEQ are causing water quality “issues”
  • Most solar projects are being built in rural southern Virginia where land is cheap and County governments don’t have the resources to fully evaluate utility scale industrial solar impacts
  • Once construction is complete, few full time jobs are created
  • It takes 8-10 acres of land to build 1 Megawatt of solar electric generating capacity

Protect Our Trees!
  • Loss of 10,500 acres of trees over the last 4 years to solar projects increases storm water and associated polluting nutrients in the Chesapeake Bay and Southern Rivers, and undercuts Virginia’s efforts to plant 48,000 new acres under the regional Chesapeake Bay Agreement
  • Loss of trees to solar frustrates VA’s ability to reduce our carbon footprint because trees store carbon
  • Loss of trees to solar development increases erosion that damages soils and fish and wildlife habitat
"Wildlife and its habitat cannot speak, so we must and we will"
- President Theodore Roosevelt

VIRGINIA IS FOR ELECTIONS:
RETURNING TO PUBLIC LIFE
TOM GARRETT FOR DELEGATE (HOD-56)
This week we turn our spotlight on a District far from Northern Virginia, but the candidate has a special place in our heart. Former Congressman Tom Garrett (website HERE) realized a few years ago that he had a problem with alcoholism and stepped away from public life representing the 5th CD. This weekend, after finding faith and recovering, Tom won the GOP nomination to represent our Party this November.

House of Delegates District 56 (HERE) includes Buckingham, Appomattox, and Cumberland Counties along with part of Goochland County and just 15 voters in Louisa County. A strong Republican District, Governor Youngkin won the new District with about 65% of the vote against Terry McAuliffe. The Democrats have not found a candidate to run in this District yet, so if no one steps forward, get ready to call Tom Delegate Garrett very soon.

VIRGINIA FEDERATION OF REPUBLICAN WOMEN

2023 ANNUAL CONVENTION RECAP
What a great time we had in the Shenandoah Valley this weekend! It began with a welcoming Happy Hour Reception hosted by Senator Mark Obenshain and his wife Suzanne at their lovely mountainside home and ended with a closing day address from the President of the National Federation of Republican Women, Eileen Sobjack.

And we welcomed a host of dignitaries in between!! We were honored by the presence of LG Winsome Sears, AG Jason Miyares, Speaker of the VA House Todd Gilbert, VA Congressman Ben Cline (6th District, Congresswoman Jen Kiggans (2nd District), former Delegate Glenn Davis (now Director of the Dept of Energy in the Youngkin administration) Delegate Chris Runion (HOD-25), Delegate Tony Wilt (HOD-26) and RPV Chair Rich Anderson. Governor Youngkin could not join us, as was attending the college graduation of one of his children. Though we missed him, we know he has his priorities straight!!

We enjoyed a rousing presentation on campaign strategy and GOTV by Holly Robichaud, founder of Tuesday Associates. A native of Massachusetts, she sure has experience in "blue" country!

There were breakout sessions, a silent auction, basket raffles and more. It was great chance to socialize and share with GOP ladies from across the Commonwealth!

IN MEMORIAM:
MARY PAULINE JONES
We are sad to relay that a hard-working young adult Republican passed away last week. Mary Pauline Jones grew up in Fairfax and Virginia GOP politics. She started out as an intern with then-Congressman Tom Davis; served as a Field Director for Fairfax Supervisor Pat Herrity, worked on the Hill and went on to form her own public affairs consulting firm. An active Town of Herndon resident, an ardent University of Alabama fan / supporter, and a friend of SUVGOP, Mary Pauline left us far too early in life. Viewing and Memorial Service information HERE. Rest In Peace, MP.
WE'RE (STILL) GETTING OUTSPENT IN NOVA!
DONATE AND SUPPORT SUVGOP'S ACTIVITIES
It's frustrating to fight in the bluest part of Virginia, but with 37% of VA's total vote, NoVA is extremely important to the GOP in every election! Our ability to make Democrats spend time and resources here helps Republicans across the Commonwealth.

SUVGOP has implemented numerous region-wide programs, hosted social events and helped dozens of local and statewide candidates and to turn the tide in NoVA we need your help!!

If you enjoy reading the Suburban Republican Weekly, The Forum, "Potluck & Politics", Think Suburbia podcasts, our numerous candidate video ads, Repeal VCEA program, diversity engagement, social media, our new SUVGOP Bookshop or even the monthly Conservative Smokers, we hope you will support SUVGOP with a donation. From $5 to $500, every contribution helps us continue our support of the GOP in NoVA.
THANK YOU!
Dear Readers:

Remember to check your spam folder and ensure you have approved receiving SRW. Delivered every Monday morning at 6:30 am.

Thank you, Your SUVGOP Team
SUVGOP Mission Statement
The mission of the Suburban Virginia Republican Coalition (SUVGOP) is to support Republican candidates and causes rooted in the fundamental, kitchen-table concerns that matter most to voters in Virginia’s suburban communities – family, vocation, community, and faith.

We believe that the Republican Party’s longstanding championship of limited government makes it best suited to lead in the Commonwealth by ensuring that government at all levels — city, county, state, and national — stays focused on its core functions and performs these activities effectively and in a fiscally responsible manner.
We seek to engage suburban voters across Virginia to promote Republican solutions to their concerns. We share these concerns — from taxes, to transportation, to education, to keeping our neighborhoods and schools safe, to rising health care costs, to cultivating a positive civic culture. We want our neighbors to know that the Republican Party cares about the issues most important to them and has thoughtful and innovative approaches to these issues.

We support policies and leadership at all levels of government that reflect America’s great history, entrepreneurial spirit, and commitment to freedom.

We, the members of the Suburban Virginia Republican Coalition, are Republicans of all ages and backgrounds, united by a commitment to collaboration and dedicated to ensuring that our communities are the best places possible for ourselves, our children, and our grandchildren. Join us today!
