Note from the Head of School (for the day)

Hello, Thacher Families!

My name is Lee Jacobs, and I am a current Upper Elementary student. On Thursday, October 29, I had the opportunity to be the Head of School for the day. I started my day with Deba greeting Children's House children as they entered the building. I then had an opportunity to visit each of the AP and Elementary classrooms to announce that my first task as HOS was to appoint Zaria Charles as my Assistant Head of School, and Asher Hung as the Assistant to the Head of School. Zaria and Asher joined me in my office, and we brainstormed an Upper Elementary activity to take place next Friday (more info to come).

After a morning of productive meetings, Deba and I had lunch; I joined my class for PE and then returned to my office with Zaria and Asher to spend the afternoon in more meetings, planning yet another future event for the Thacher students. It was very cool being the Head of School for the day, and I'm thankful for having this experience!

"Times have changed, and science has made great progress, and so has our work, but our principles have only been confirmed, and along with them our conviction that mankind can hope for a solution to its problems, among which the MOST URGENT ARE THOSE OF PEACE AND UNITY, only by turning its attention and energies to the discovery of the child and to the development of the great potentialities of the human personality in the course of its formation."

Holistic Wellness

“Holistic Wellness” is an approach to being healthy that takes into consideration an individual’s physical, mental, emotional, and social well being. They are inextricably linked and require attention and “self-care” in order to remain in harmony and balance. I like to think of each of them as the face of a pyramid that connects and supports one another. At different times one may be the foundation that the other three sit on in order to remain strong and stable.

It is important that a person maintains an awareness of which of the four requires attention, and mindfully responds in an appropriate manner. A response to a busy or overactive mind is to immerse oneself in a physical or social activity that stimulates the senses. It is responding paradoxically. If there is inner discomfort, lean on the outside and physical dimensions and if it is external, use your mind and reasoning to help find balance.

One practice that I highly recommend that may support your overall wellness is breathing. Specifically, 4-7-8 breathing with Dr. Andrew Weil.
