Important Note from the Head of School

Dear Thacher Families,

Now that we are back from Thanksgiving break and 9 days away from entering our winter break, we must remain vigilant with health protocols more than ever. I have been carefully monitoring the daily positive COVID cases in Massachusetts. Numbers are steadily increasing, and the significant uptick in positive cases over the past week has been attributed to Thanksgiving travels and gatherings outside of established pods.

On Wednesday, December 2, 2020, the CDC released an updated set of travel guidelines, which recommends that staying home is the best way to protect yourself and others from COVID-19. Should emergency out-of-state travel need to take place, it is recommended that travelers take a PCR COVID test 3-5 days after their return home and quarantine for 14 days. This is the best way to prevent any spread of the virus. With the holiday break looming, the numbers of positive COVID tests rising, and my responsibility to keep our students and staff safe and our school open, I am writing to inform you that this new travel policy will be implemented at Thacher effective immediately

For any family/student traveling outside of the state, you must:

  • Inform Nurse Carolynn of your destination and dates of travel
  • Quarantine for two weeks upon your arrival back to Massachusetts (regardless of a PCR negative test)

Until today, we have been fortunate at Thacher to be COVID-free. I believe this is due in part to our collective efforts to wear masks, maintain stringent social-distancing, and consistently follow the many safety protocols the school has put in place to keep our community safe. Unfortunately, we have now experienced our first positive COVID-19 exposure within our community. A notice informing our community of this new development was sent out to families before sending this Notes Home. Click Here to read this notice.

Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or concerns.

We are actively accepting applications for September 2021 enrollment. Our application deadline is January 29, 2021.

In order to plan for this unusual enrollment year, it is important that we receive sibling applications sooner than later. Please apply as soon as possible if you are interested in submitting an application for the sibling of your currently enrolled child.

"No problem can be solved from the same level of consciousness that created it."
-Albert Einstein

We can relate this quote to many areas of our lives...work, school, relationships, and even the current pandemic.

Racism is a significant problem that comes to mind when reading the words of Albert Einstein. We must challenge our way of thinking in order to begin to solve the problem. Years of conscious and systemic oppression have led to prejudice, stereotypes, and assumptions about people of color or others who appear different from ourselves. These harmful belief systems helped shape the unconscious biases we hold today.

It is common for us to challenge thoughts that we are aware of, but we have to be deliberate about addressing thoughts that arise outside of our conscious awareness. The video below is about these "blind spots." It explains why they exist and how we can challenge our assumptions in order to see things from a different perspective.

Essential Wellness Apps for the Holiday Season

As the holidays approach and we indulge in familial traditions of merry drinking and incredible consumption of foods, we may need a "friend" to help us through. The decadent desserts, creamy sides, and delicious proteins available to us create a caloric thunderstorm that has its consequences. Do not despair. Two Apps can help make sure we enjoy all the delicacies and still remain fit and have no regrets.

The "LoseIt" app guides how to overcome days of indulgences and informs its user of how to find a balance between movement and consumption. It is also a great tool if you require support for gaining good weight or shedding pounds.

"Fooducate" is a tool that helps consumers evaluate and purchase foods that contain the most nutrients and allows for better choices by providing grades for numerous everyday foods we eat.

I hope you find these apps useful as we head into the holiday season.
