Note from Deba

Dear Families,

It is with great pleasure that I report over 90% student retention for the upcoming 2021-2022 academic year. Thank you! Your confidence in our programs and dedication and commitment to our school was evident in your re-enrollment responses. We look forward to continuing our journey with you.

March 10th closed the first phase of our admissions process for new students. The large number of outstanding applications representing children and families eager to join our community created difficult choices for the Admissions Committee. With so few spaces available to fill and the uncertainty of September social-distancing restrictions, we have the largest number of students placed into our wait pool in recent memory.

I am most appreciative of our stellar Director of Admission and Enrollment Management, Nikki Toon. Nikki spent weeks of long hours, nights, and weekends, providing a smooth, positive experience to our prospective families. I am also thankful to our guides, who joined Nikki in conducting over a hundred interviews, and current parents, who joined us in Zooms to answer questions and share their experiences of being part of the Thacher Community.

We truly have a community built on a partnership of respect, love of children, and shared values.

Thank you all for making this a wonderful place to work and grow.

In partnership,

Deba

Diversity Update

Thacher Community
We had such a positive experience engaging with Black History Month this past February. Here are some things we accomplished:

  • Children's House - We diversified bookshelf offerings and readings to children. (Thank you to parents who contributed material.)

  • Staff - Shared resources and articles and engaged in personal conversations to increase awareness of diversity and racism issues

  • Administrative Staff attended anti-racism training through the American Montessori Society (AMS). Specifically looking at the school accreditation standards through a diversity lens. Several staff members also attended the AMS conference, including specific presenters on this topic, to enhance their knowledge and engagement with addressing diversity and racism through Montessori education.

  • Upper Elementary - Some members of the UE community engaged in biographies of Black people. After completing a written biography, they made timelines, Google slideshows, or presented monologue performances. Their work results are currently on display in the library--Check it out if you can!
