If, for some reason, you are unable to make it Saturday, you are welcome to observe our in-school dress rehearsal on Thursday, April 25th at 9:00am in the gym.

If you wish to help out by bringing refreshments or setting up equipment, please email Victor at music@thacherschool.org. Also, truly, feel free to email with any question whatsoever.

Dress for creativity, comfort and celebration.
"You guys! What a perfect way to prevent llama drama from kids like mine, who may otherwise have been sad when the parents left. Thanks to your thoughtfulness, I had no probllama leaving because I knew Bennett was, as always, in loving hands." -- Kelly Isenor

JP Wake up the Earth Festival
Saturday, 5/4

Why we WUTE!

We can best improve the future for our children by educating them to be the change in the world we want to see. Maria Montessori believed that our children were the best hope for world peace. We want the students at Thacher to be citizens of the world, be aware of their environment, and to value the communities in which they live.

In 1979, the Jamaica Plain  Wake up the Earth (WUTE) festival began. WUTE was a celebration for the community that came together to stop the Interstate 95 extension being built. That expressway would have destroyed the beautiful Fowl Meadow, a vital wetland that runs just little over a 1/4 of a mile behind our school and the Wakefield estate; it would have brought terrible air quality and pollution to the area and cut through and separate existing communities. Residents of Dedham, Milton, Hyde Park, Roslindale, Jamaica Plain, and Roxbury came together to protest and won the victory!

Today, the  Wake up the Earth Festival (WUTE) is comprised of a wonderfully vibrant parade of costumes and banners and a festival of arts and music and fun for children and families. Thacher attends and this year, I would love to see our community parade together and have our families and students celebrate for world peace and the environment. I have asked Rene our wonderful art teacher to help our students and parents who wish to attend to prepare banners and signs. Victor has arranged for some students from Thacher to perform musical and band pieces on of the stages, and we will have a table for Thacher with cooperative games, Montessori materials, and a sit-down picnic together – bring a blanket – planned for 1pm onwards.

The parade starts near the Loring-Greenough House  at 11:00 am on Saturday, May 4, 2019. The festival then runs from noon to 6pm.

Please let me know you would like to join the festivities by sending an email to Mary at the front desk.
