Note from Deba

Dear Thacher Community,

As I am sure you are aware, there was a fatal car accident in our driveway in the early morning hours on Wednesday. Closing the school for the day was necessary due to downed live power lines and two damaged utility poles. Three streets were closed for most of the day, and power was not restored to the school until after 3:00 pm. Thank you for your understanding of the closure.

Our sympathy goes out to the family for their untimely loss. The deceased’s family and friends held a vigil Wednesday night, and you can see the memorial they left near the road. We are allowing their visible display of grief to remain there until we return from the April break. While we do not wish to cause concern and worry with any of our students, we trust that you will find the words appropriate to your child’s level of understanding to help them with questions they may have about the memorial visible as you drive into the school.

This tragic loss of life at our doorstep is a reminder of the dangerous road we travel to and from school each day. I take this moment to remind everyone once again that making a left turn into the school from Route 138 is prohibited. Cars and, worse, large trucks frequently speed through the yellow or red lights at the corner of Brush Hill and Route 138, and it would be devastating if anyone from our community was involved in an accident and injured while trying to make the left turn into the school.

Please be safe, protect yourself and your precious family by taking the extra few minutes to go around the house to the stoplight at the corner. Feel free to call me if you have questions or concerns.

In partnership,

Deba

Discussion Tips

Some students have been aware of the trail of Derek Chauvin, who is charged with the murder of George Floyd. This can be a difficult topic to discuss with children, so we wanted to share tips for parents during the trial of Derek Chauvin for the death of George Floyd .
