Personal Digital Assistants

The Spokane Association of REALTORS® Communications committee (pictured above) invited members of the Technology Committee and Professional Development Committee to join the conversation about Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs).
Devices that respond to voice command, from smart speakers to smart lightbulbs to smart doorbells, are surging in popularity.
One recent report estimates that 26% of Americans now own a smart speaker through which they can access digital assistants such as Amazon's Alexa, Google's Assistant, or Apple's Siri.
These artificial intelligence interfaces can connect with tens of thousands of other household devices.
" Alexa, ask Real Estate to find me a home."
Sal Prividera of Voiceter Pro brought his real estate industry experience and technology expertise to our table as we began to explore how to deploy PDAs with our members and clients.

"Voice gives associations more avenues to reach members," says Stephen Gasque (pictured), director of broadcast communications at the National Association of REALTORS® and head of its voice application initiatives.
"Voice can leverage content associations already have and deliver it in a way that members can consume conveniently as part of their day while they're on the go."

SAR Changes
SAR photo
Perhaps you've noticed that the gas station near the SAR has doubled its size in recent weeks, adding a second bank of pumps to the east (see photo above).
This change removed the overflow parking lot SAR members and guests had been using, and increased traffic through the SAR main parking lot.
In response to these impacts, your association Board of Directors did two things: we installed a fence along our south property line (this stops drive-through traffic), and purchased the property to the east to be paved soon (this adds back overflow parking).
If you have any questions about these changes, please contact the association's Executive Vice President Rob Higgins via email here or by phone at  326-9222.

Spokane Home Builders Perspective

Spokane Home Builders Looks for New Ways to Find Labor
Spokane Home Builders has a new problem on its hands: finding enough workers to build homes in Spokane.
Joel White, the Executive Director of the Spokane Home Builder's Association (SHBA), recently spoke to the SAR Governmental Affairs Committee (above) and reported a growing workforce shortage threatens the future of his industry.
"In Spokane, there are five workers retiring for every new employee on the job," said White. He is interested in partnering with SAR for help with campaigns to attract more apprentices and on-the-job training programs.
White also reported that land use restrictions and regulatory burdens in Spokane are becoming excessive, especially when compared to nearby jurisdictions.
"The average time to build in Spokane is eight to nine  months compared to a regional average of four to six months," offered White.
New regulatory fees also create challenges.
White estimates that, on average, for every $1,000 increase in fees or cost of the home means 85 families in Spokane are priced out of the marketplace.
"With rental vacancies hovering near 1%, renters face difficult societal problems, often moving for cost factors, have more unstable families, are not vested in the community and have lower graduation rates for students."
The Homebuilders Association and local
REALTORS® have pledged to work together to find more opportunities for families to find homes, and to create more housing opportunities for everyone.
Be a part of this discussion and join your Governmental Affairs Committee!
