Diversity-Equity-Inclusion

Committee

Spokane Realtors® convened its Diversity - Equity - Inclusion committee, this week - a historical first for the association.

“This was our first meeting of the brand-new DEI committee for Spokane Realtors. Still working on a mission statement, but our hope is to provide education and training to our members and work to develop strategic relations within our community that will encourage outreach and diverse recruitment.”

Black Home Initiative (BHI) targets the racial inequities at the core of the housing ecosystem in an effort to increase home-ownership among Black households.

Washington REALTORS® Instructor Mark Kitabayashi will be here live and in-person to teach his "Washington Real Estate Fair Housing" 6-hr class.

Your first active renewal after June 1st, 2022, must include the 6-hour Washington Real Estate Fair housing class.

The course will teach real estate brokers and managing brokers the historical and societal context of housing discrimination, legal framework intended to prevent housing discrimination, and steps to take to prevent housing discrimination.

Annual Property Tax Statements will be Mailed to Taxpayers by March 15, 2023.

Real property valuations across Spokane County were up 31.5% overall, last year.

Real property taxes are up 5% overall, this year.

Also up this year are many public levies and bonds that voters approved in recent years for schools, libraries, and public safety.

Who can Offer Seller Financing?

Washington Realtors® Legal Hotline lawyer Annie Fitzsimmons is back with a new video to share who can offer a seller financing.

The top section of form 22C is the seller financing addendum, and lists the qualifications of who is able under Washington law to offer seller financing.

Annie also explains what to do if unable to secure seller financing.

The video runs five-minutes.

Condolences

A memorial service for Joe McKinnon (pictured), formerly with R.C. Schwartz & Associates, will be held on Saturday, February 25, 2023 at 11:00 am at Holy Cross Cemetery, 7200 North Wall Street, Spokane, WA 99208.

There will be a reception from 2 – 4 p.m. at the Hemmingson Center at Gonzaga University (2nd floor, Northwest corner).

Joe passed away last December after a long battle with cancer.

“Christmas Joe” was a member of the Association for over 30 years and helped organize the Independent Brokers Christmas Party for years.

The Joe McKinnon Christmas Spirit Award was established in his honor in 2019 due to his amazing Christmas Spirit.

He is greatly missed.

Former Windermere Manito broker and long-time KHQ-TV Weather Forecaster George Maupin passed away Tuesday in Spokane at the age of 79.

Wife Nancy was a broker at the same firm.

George was born in Los Angeles in 1943, was drafted and served in the Army in Vietnam.

After military service, George began his broadcasting career in California, then worked in the business in Nevada for a time. He and his family moved to Spokane in 1993 where he began working at KHQ-TV as a newscast producer. Later, he stepped into the morning show as weather anchor. He retired in 2012 after nearly 20 years at the station.
