WR 2020 Legislative Day - Photo-essay
|
Spokane Association of REALTORS® Broker members brought the Washington REALTORS® voice to lawmakers in Olympia, last week, for the Washington REALTORS® 2020 Legislative Day (photo above).
Here's a four-minute video that shows our day on the Hill:

Washington REALTORS® 2020 Legislative Day
|
This year's Washington REALTORS® Legislative Day attracted the largest-ever class of REALTOR® attendees - more than 500 - including two dozen from the Spokane Association of REALTORS®.
This year's class photo of Team SAR (below) is taken inside the Capitol rotunda due to heavy rain all day during our visit.
The 2020 Washington State Legislative Session is relatively short due to this being a non-budget year.
To date, more than 1,200 bills have been filed, more than 700 of which include the word "housing."
Our REALTOR® issues, this year, include bills on housing supply, tax exemptions, independent contractor status, and agency law provisions ( see details online here).
Among the legislators with whom we met was Senate Majority Leader Andy Billig (pictured above) who was elected to the Washington State House of Representatives in 2010 and to the Washington State Senate in 2012. He serves constituents from the 3rd Legislative District (Spokane).
Pictured, left to right: Sen. Andy Billig (in red tie); Cynthia Gustafson, SAR Key Contact to Sen. Billig; Tom Hormel, WR President-elect; Nathan Gorton, WR Governmental Affairs Director; Darin Watkins, SAR Governmental Affairs Director.
Washington REALTORS® would like to extend our gratitude to the 500+ REALTORS® and Affiliates who showed up for the WR Legislative Day event on January 22-23rd.
The sheer number of REALTORS® who came from all over our state to represent our members and property owners' is a statement to our Legislators in itself and we are thrilled that over 120 of the members who registered were first-time attendees!

2020 Census
|
The National Association of Realtors® has signed on as a National Partner for the upcoming 2020 Census.
NAR is asking the 1.4 million Realtors® nationwide to help drive Census participation in their respective communities.
"NAR is able to provide tremendous value to our members because of the research we produce examining trends in communities across this country. But the usefulness of that information relies on current, accurate data from the federal government," said NAR President
Vince Malta, broker at Malta & Co., Inc., in San Francisco. "Full participation in the Census is in many ways the only way to ensure that data is correct."

New Scammers go after REALTORS®
|
When a fellow REALTOR® calls and asks for a favor, most of us might, at first, think "sure!"
A new scam, however, may have you thinking twice before you agree.
It goes like this:
Tricksters pose as real estate agents and other trusted professionals, asking for financial "favors" from unsuspecting victims.
In one example of the scheme, a scammer may pretend to be a real estate practitioner asking his or her coworkers to pick up hundreds of dollars in gift cards for closing gifts to clients.
Real estate pros may be particularly vulnerable to such scams because their name, phone number, and place of work is often readily available to the public.
"As we become more aware of possible scams, these bad actors are upping their game and using the people we know and trust to get to our money," Arkansas Attorney General
Leslie Rutledge says. "They use familiar names and have believable requests, but when it comes to your money, always use an abundance of caution. Pick up the phone and call directly."
Rutledge offers some tips to avoid such scams.
