Spokane Home Builders Perspective
|
Spokane Home Builders Looks for New Ways to Find Labor
Spokane Home Builders has a new problem on its hands: finding enough workers to build homes in Spokane.
Joel White, the Executive Director of the Spokane Home Builder's Association (SHBA), recently spoke to the SAR Governmental Affairs Committee (above) and reported a growing workforce shortage threatens the future of his industry.
"In Spokane, there are five workers retiring for every new employee on the job," said White. He is interested in partnering with SAR for help with campaigns to attract more apprentices and on-the-job training programs.
White also reported that land use restrictions and regulatory burdens in Spokane are becoming excessive, especially when compared to nearby jurisdictions.
"The average time to build in Spokane is eight to nine months compared to a regional average of four to six months," offered White.
New regulatory fees also create challenges.
White estimates that, on average, for every $1,000 increase in fees or cost of the home means 85 families in Spokane are priced out of the marketplace.
"With rental vacancies hovering near 1%, renters face difficult societal problems, often moving for cost factors, have more unstable families, are not vested in the community and have lower graduation rates for students."
The Homebuilders Association and local
REALTORS® have pledged to work together to find more opportunities for families to find homes, and to create more housing opportunities for everyone.
Be a part of this discussion and join your Governmental Affairs Committee!
